A werewolf is a mythical creature that is either able to transform into a wolf or exists as a human/wolf hybrid.
The earliest werewolf legends go back thousands of years. In some versions of the legend, a human can be transformed into a werewolf by being bitten by one. This form of the legend may have been based on observation of humans who contracted rabies, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal.
In some variations, the werewolf has been cursed by a witch or sorcerer. In others, the werewolf willingly transforms into a wolf by wearing an enchanted wolf skin, sleeping under a full moon, or preforming other magic.
The werewolf's curse is often tied to the full moon. While werewolves in some stories are able to transform into a wolf any time, they are usually forced to change when the moon is full. The connection between werewolves and the full moon may be based on the superstition that the full moon causes people to act strangely.
In some stories, werewolves retain at least some of their human personality and awareness when in the form of a wolf. In others, the werewolf becomes completely wild and bloodthirsty, often transforming back into a human with no memory of events that happened when they were in wolf form.
Some people suffer from a rare psychiatric condition called clinical lycanthropy, in which they believe they have transformed into a wolf or other animal.
A shapeshifter is a person who is able to magically change their form in some way. Well known shapeshifters include Mystique from the X-Men series and Loki from Norse mythology and Marvel Universe tales.
In Japanese folklore, kitsune are intelligent foxes that have the ability to transform into human form. A selkie is a creature from Scottish folklore that is able to change from seal to human form. A kelpie is a sea monster that is able to walk on land in the form of a horse, in order to tempt unsuspecting humans to climb on to its back.
Something to try: Write a horror story in which a main character is a shapeshifter. |
