About This Newsletter

Well, hello there! I believe this is my first time as a guest editor of this newsletter. My love of mermaids, and a few other mythical creatures, go way back to my childhood. So, for my first fantasy newsletter, we will take a look at the difference between mermaids and sirens!

In folklore, a mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Sirens; the dark, edgy sisters of mermaids. Sirens are considered to be evil creatures who live in the sea. Generally, they are depicted as beautiful women with the tails of fish, but they can also be shown as scary, humanoid creatures with sharp teeth for tearing apart humans. Sirens are known for luring sailors with their enchanting songs and then killing them.

*StarfishV* It's important to know the differences between a Mermaid and a Siren

*Gemv* Sirens are dangerous but mermaids are friendly.
The biggest difference between sirens and mermaids certainly is the fact that mermaids are generally friendly creatures while sirens are dangerous and even kill people.

*Gemv* Sirens guided dead people to the otherworld.
The sirens not only killed people though. They were also thought to accompany dead souls from the human world to the otherworld.

*Gemv* The words “mermaid” and “siren” have totally different roots.
The word siren comes from the ancient Greek word seirḗn. The etymology of that word is not fully clear but it seems to be derived from the Semitic root for “singing” which is “sir” .

The word mermaid on the other hand is of Old English origin and means “a young girl from the sea” from mere (sea) and maid (girl or young woman).

*Gemv* Sirens only appeared in Greek mythology but mermaids do in myths from around the world.

*Gemv* Sirens are only female but mermaids have male counterparts.

         *Bulletv* Sirens have sharp teeth

*Bulletv* Mermaids are non-predatory water creatures
*Bulletv* Sirens are predatory water creatures

*Bulletv* Mermaids are friendly and naive
         *Bulletv* Sirens are dangerous, insidious

*Bulletv* Mermaids are beautiful and colorful
*Bulletv* Sirens are typically dark green with sharp gills

*Bulletv* Mermaids are not allowed to talk to Sirens
*Bulletv* Sirens are not allowed to leave the deep parts of the sea

*Bulletv* Mermaids practice good magic
*Bulletv* Sirens practice dark magic and are manipulative, flirty

*StarfishV* Some amazing facts!

*Bulletv* A mermaid kiss gives you gills. According to ancient folklore, a kiss from a mermaid gives the ability to breathe underwater.

*Bulletv* Mermaids have four main superpowers.
         Immortality - can live forever
Precognition - the ability to see the future
Telepathy - communication of thoughts or ideas by means other than the known senses, ESP
Hypnosis - the induction of a state of consciousness where the person becomes responsive to suggestion or direction

*Bulletv* The color of a mermaid's tail depicts her mood and reflects the mermaid's personality

*Starfishv* The Four Main Types of Mermaids
*Bulletv* Traditional mermaids - sea-dwelling only
*Bulletv* Irish Shedding Mermaids - can shed their tail and walk on land
*Bulletv* Shape Shifters - can change to human form when necessary
