About This Newsletter

Quote for the week: "In the main, ghosts are said to be forlorn and generally miserable, if not downright depressed. The jolly ghost is rare."

A poltergeist is a type of spirit entity that is said to be responsible for physical disturbances. The word "poltergeist" is German for rumbling or noisy spirit. Unlike ordinary ghosts which are not able to affect the physical environment, poltergeists are said to be able to levitate or throw objects, create loud noises or foul smells, and physically attack people. In some cases, poltergeists are said to be simply mischievous, playing basically harmless pranks. Others seem to be more malevolent, actually trying to harm or even kill people.

One famous real life suspected poltergeist was the Bell Witch of Tennessee. The Bell Witch was believed to be responsible for attacks on a famer named John Bell, his family, and the area surrounding their home for more than five years in the early 1800s. It was called the the Bell Witch because local people believed it was the spirit of an elderly woman who had been rumored to be a witch.

Another famous real life case that involved suspected poltergeists is the Amityville case, which inspired the book and film, The Amityville Horror. The book and movie depict experiences of a family who moved into a house on Long Island where a previous resident had killed six members of his family. Many of the events in the movie are unsubstantiated and have since been said to have never actually happened.

Poltergeists are often said to haunt specific people rather than places. Many cases of supposed hauntings by poltergeists involved families with unruly children or young teens. The energy of rebellious children or teens in the throes of puberty have been said to attract the troublesome spirits. In many cases, deliberate pranks by the children might provide the actual cause of the events.

Many supposed poltergeist hauntings have been debunked. Some have been exposed as deliberate hoaxes while others have been at least partially explained by local weather events, minor earthquakes, or peculiarities of certain houses.

In your story, you have the choice of making the poltergeist activity a hoax, something explained by natural events, or an actual poltergeist. If it is explained by natural events, make sure your explanation is possible.

Something to try: Write a horror story that includes a poltergeist.
