“I’m a strong Alpha Male, but sensitive.” – Jason Momoa
“I would say probably my most alpha quality is my competitive nature. I’m very competitive and it brings out the man in me.” – Ashton Kutcher.
First off, please forgive me for missing my June Newsletter. I was definitely in Vacation mode and totally forgot it was due when it was due. But I’m back now!
Well, July is definitely a HOT month, especially here in SoCal. So, for me, it’s about cooling down! I like to visit the Pacific Ocean (about an hour away), or the local lake. We do have a county pool nearby. Then there’s Hurricane Harbor. If anything, I need to go to these places more often. Haha.
Did you know? It’s national Watermelon month? This is my quick fix if I want to cool down. How do you cool down when it’s hot? I’ll share the answers in my next Newsletter.
Thanks to everyone for taking my “Favorite Romance Genre” poll. The top 2 vote getters were Romantic Comedy & Romantic Fantasy.
Well, since July is so hot, I thought I’d talk about another hot thing – Alpha Males. They’ve dominated romance writing for a quite a while and with good reason. They’re hot! But what makes an Alpha Male hot? What makes him appealing? What are the traits of an Alpha Male? That’s what this newsletter is about!
If you have some time, I developed a word search with traits that an Alpha Male exhibits. If you’d like to do the word search, I’d appreciate it. Let me know you reviewed the puzzle and I’ll send you a MB for word searches!

What is an Alpha Male in romance writing? Well, he’s been around for a long time. It’s hard to put a “definition” on him – he’s domineering, he’s a leader. He’s the hero. Quite honestly, it’s the traits that define him in our writing, and a 1-2 sentence definition does not do him justice.
That said, an Alpha male has changed over the years. In the 1970’s he was capable of being quite violent. There’s Kathleen Woodiwiss whose Alpha Male was prone to taking what he wanted, whether she wanted it or not. Then here’s Rebecca Brandewyne, whose alpha males were domineering, but never violent.
In today’s modern romance writing and in light of “me too,” Alpha males take on new challenges and meet them head on.
One of the traits that crosses over no matter what generation, is that he’s attractive – and not just “attractive” – he’s drop dead gorgeous. His appearance can make the heart flutter pretty quickly. He’s chiseled and defined which leads into the fact that he’s very strong and courageous. He’s not afraid to back down from a challenge.
He has a take charge attitude. Need a problem solved? He’s the guy. He’s a man of action and he can show it by being the strong, silent type, or he can be arrogant – take your pick. One thing he is not - lacking is confidence. He has plenty of that.
An Alpha Male is a leader, and he’s not afraid to lead. He’s self-assured and his potential is bound only by the limits of his imagination. He doesn’t take bull from anyone. This is a guy with integrity.
More specifically, when you meet him, you’ll find he’s not afraid to make eye contact. He’s got good posture and he speaks clearly. This is a guy who sets goals and is not afraid to fail.
One thing the Alpha has moved away from over the years is that he doesn’t treat people poorly. He’s confident, maybe arrogant, but he’s not a jerk. Cross him, that’s fine. He drops you like a hot rock. Revenge isn’t worth it to him. He’s got better things to do with his time.
One of my favorite movie Alpha Males is William Wallace from Braveheart. Another one for me is Pete Mitchell from Top Gun.
Write in and share your favorite Alphas

Feedback from my Romance/Love Newsletter dated 18 MAY 2022:
Jeff
Thanks for featuring my story in this week's newsletter!
Incurable Romantic
StephB,
In your May newsletter, you asked us to tell you what attracted us to our spouse, partner, or significant other.
There were a small number of things that attracted me to my late wife, Linda, during my senior year in high school, though I wouldn't realize what one of them was until after we became a couple.
The things that I DID notice right away that attracted me to her were her shyness, and her beauty. She would never have won a beauty contest, but the way she looked, between her great figure and adorable face, was more than enough to catch my eye. And that shyness of hers only made me want to know more about her.
I could easily understand the shyness, because I was as shy as she was. It felt like it took forever to get that first opportunity to begin getting to know her. And only after that first meeting did I realize that it was actually the Lord that brought us together at that first meeting. We were both too shy to do it on our own, so He did it for us.
And His continued guidance through our life together brought us closer with each passing day, and gave us both the most wonderful years of our lives. Our time together was short, only 14 years, 11 1/2 of it married, before she died, but that time He gave us was flawless, and the love He gave us for each other could not have been any deeper. And her epileptic seizures, that drove countless others away from her, only brought us closer with each passing day.
I thank Him frequently for giving us both a love, and a life together that was, is, and will always be, irreplaceable.
Jim - aka Incurable Romantic
