Imagine living through your worst nightmare. Then imagine living through it alone.
Horror characters who are isolated from other people face extra challenges. They have nobody to turn to for help and have to rely on their own resources. Even the most resourceful or talented person usually has some weaknesses. If the character is pursued by a serial killer or other evil character, they will not be able to call the police to help.
Characters might be isolated in different ways. The story might take place in a wilderness location. Characters in a more populated region might be isolated due to a storm or power outage. A character who is surrounded by other people might be confined inside their own mind by mental illness or the effects of drugs.
Stories where one character is alone are often difficult to write (and read) due to the absence of dialogue. If your character is alone, consider giving them a pet so they will have someone to talk to.
The "Last of Their Kind" is a common trope in Sci-fi, Horror, and Fantasy. In this trope, a character is the only survivor of their civilization or species after an apocalyptic event such as a pandemic or war. In the Twilight Zone episode, Time Enough at Last, a bank teller who loves to read survives a bomb blast that kills all other humans because he had hidden inside a bank vault to read. When he emerges from the vault and realizes he is now alone, he looks forward to spending eternity reading the books he never had time for before. However, in one last cruel twist of fate, he stumbles and breaks his thick eyeglasses, without which he cannot read.
Something to try: Write a horror story in which a character is alone. |
