Abuse of Membership
This is something we all hate to see, and it happens inadvertently with new members who haven't read the Free Membership requirements thoroughly.
Free membership allows you to post five single items up to 50 kbs each..
This lets you get a feel for the site before you make a decision to purchase an extended, upgraded membership. It's one of the advantages I appreciated when I first joined. I like to test things out before I spend my money, don't you? Free membership doesn't expire, so if you choose to keep it forever, that's okay.
Don't abuse it by adding just one more teeny, little poem!
Five items mean five items. You can't slip more than one poem to a page thinking it's okay since they are both short. It's not okay. It may not be noticed right away, but sooner or later, it will, and then the work will be deleted promptly. We don't want that to happen to anyone. If you haven't stored it in your computer, it's gone forever.
Other extras that free members don't have are not a problem because you won't have access to them. creating images, sigs, message boards or groups, for instance. You can't do these things because the system won't let you. Adding a second separate story or poem to an existing item can actually be done by editing the item, but, it's against the rules!
By doing this you risk losing your work the first time, losing your membership the second.
QUESTION
I'm a free member - Can I host a contest?
ANSWER
Yes, you can host a contest. As a member with a free account, you can use an In & Out for people to add their entry. The In & Out can be used for anything you can creatively imagine using it for.
NON-E SCROLL, CONTENT AND INTRO
We all know curse words are NON-E. Sometimes we forget that replacements for curse words are also Non-E rated. Even words as simple as 'darn', 'crap' and, any derogatory word such as 'stupid'. If in doubt, either don't use it in the Intro, or make the Intro NON-E.
If the brief description and/or Title contains any such word, the rating cannot be E for everyone.
If you are using scroll, you don't have a choice. It must be NON-E AT ALL TIMES.
Re-read this item on rating and study it. If Staff or a Moderator notices a non-E word on an E rated item, they will change the rate immediately, and you will not ever be able to change it back yourself. You will have to ask for it to be changed if you cut the word.
We want you to enjoy the site and all it has to offer. The requirements are not grievous to follow, and they make the site more enjoyable for everyone.
Enjoy the site and Write on!

Thank you for this newsletter, an encouragement in itself.
I think the sheer act of making an item accessible to the whole public needs to be borne in mind at all times, whatever aspect of reviewing is being considered. This is our ultimate reaching out to the world, irrespective of the world's reaction, which - in my opinion - should never answer one's expectations too closely.

I agree, Alec. Thanks for the reminders.

Great newsletter, Esprit! You always relate so well with the audience. I found it interesting you used Patricia Cornwell as an example. Her books are quite popular at my library and now I feel inspired to ask the patrons how they feel about her more recent writings. Many times patrons will comment on authors that have written several books, about how that person just doesn't write as well as what they use to. Makes you wonder... Perhaps their publicists are pressuring them to pump new books out so they can make money. I know that libraries usually purchase books from well-know authors, so they are going to make money there for sure.
Again, thank for an excellent newsletter!
Love, Cubby ")
I tend to think it was contract rush, and I'll bet she hates being in that position!
If you do get feedback from your patrons, I'd be interested in hearing it. Thanks, Cubby.

As a library director, I do all the ordering for our library. I read reviews, browse bestseller lists, and guess what? The first thing that grabs me is the title. There are some great titles out there, I can tell you that. Unfortunately, there are also bad ones and I have to force myself to read the reviews on those, and... sometimes they are very good reviews. Just think of all the eyes that have scanned a not-so-good title and missed a good book because the title wasn't grabbing. You are absolutely right... first impressions can make or break a sale.

Thanks again, Cubby.
We always appreciate the feedback, thanks!
