Letter from the editor

Here we go. It’s another year. I had some hopes of a nice fresh start, but my family and I haven’t had the best couple of days. My mom has a chest infection, my sis and her kids have come down with some sort of virus, my husband sat on – and consequently broke – his glasses, and I’ve broken four of my toes. It could have gone better. It could have gone worse. I will have to change my exercise plans for the next few weeks, but I am still hopeful for a successful year. After all, there’s a lot of it left.

Many people set goals for the year to come. It’s only natural. When those plans do not immediately go as hoped for, though, there is no reason to feel defeated. Life happens. You do not have to give up. You can simply alter your plans, or try again. Your hopes and dreams are no less valid in February, or in June, or September. Any time of the year is a perfect time for that fresh start. All that it takes is for you to decide that you’re going to act on your goals here and now.

Other than exercise my plans include improving my general health and spending less time in front of a screen. I am going to try out some arts and crafts to see if anything sticks. Arts and crafts can be difficult for me, because I am dyspraxic. Dyspraxia is a coordination disorder and it affects my fine motor skills. My mom and dad are both into diamond painting, but that’s definitely not happening for me. I’ve purchased a wooden 3D puzzle of a butterfly and I’ve been eyeing a botanical Lego set. Hopefully those will turn out to be doable for me, and perhaps I’ll even find a new hobby.

On the writing front, I’m participating in "The Contest ChallengeOpen in new Window. [13+] and I’ve signed up for "I Write in 2024Open in new Window. [13+]. For the Contest Challenge you need to enter at least one of the listed contests per month. For I Write you need to write at least 24 contest/activity entries in 2024, and review the fellow participant who posted an entry in the I Write forum before you. More badges can be earned through greater participation. You can earn up to 15 badges!

If you have written or created anything in the past year that you are particularly proud of, you can submit it for consideration for "The QuillsOpen in new Window. [ASR] (if it hasn’t been nominated already). You can choose up to three items and post them in "Quill Self-Submission Forum - CLOSED Open in new Window. [13+]. There is no guarantee that they will be nominated, but you’ve given your items a better shot at it by increasing their visibility. The more people who read the submissions and consider items for nomination, the better, so if you have some time, your participation is appreciated. The deadline for self-submissions is the 7th of January, and the deadline for the 2023 Quills nominations is the 10th.

Looking ahead, it’s a good idea to create a ‘New Items’ folder, or a 2024 folder in your portfolio to help people find items to nominate for the 2024 Quills. The easier it is to find what’s new, the more likely it is that people will read, review and consider your work.

If, like me, you’d like to read more, "Rach's Reading ClubOpen in new Window. [E] is a good activity to join. You may as well earn awards and Merit Badges whilst doing something you enjoy! And you never know, you may find some wonderful books by having a look at what other participants have read and recommend. It is also fun to see what others think of your own favourites. You may even make some friends!

Whatever your goals and plans, I hope that you succeed. I wish you health and joy and inspiration in this new year. May your portfolio be filled with your best items yet.
