About This Newsletter

A banner for the Romance/Love newsletter.

“What is love? It is the morning and the evening star.” – Sinclair Lewis.

Romance: An ardent emotional attachment between two people. A love affair.

September is a month of change. Autumn is just around the corner. In fact, it falls on Sunday, September 22nd this month. The temperatures are getting cooler, and the sun is setting earlier in the day. In the north, the leaves are turning different colors. School has started for the kids. In its own way, there’s a lot of romance to be found in Autumn. Friends re-connect in school. A walk through the local park and the rustic leaves stirs the heartstrings. In don’t know about you, but for some reason I keep thinking about the movie, “When Harry met Sally.” *Smile*

In this newsletter, we’re going to look at some romantic plots. Which ones are our favorites? What are some classic romantic plots you find throughout literature? I’d love to hear your feedback.

Results from the Summer poll in my August Newsletter:

The question was: Calling all you romance readers! When you read a romance, what's your HEAT level? Do you enjoy a sweet romance or one that's erotic?

The winner was: Spicy! *Heart* *Heart* *Heart* The couple gets sexual in the bedroom. The scenes may be explicit, but they are tasteful.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the poll!

Letter from the editor

Star Crossed:
Growing up, I didn’t really pay much attention to romance and then I read “Romeo and Juliet,” in the 9th grade. These star-crossed lovers really tugged on my heartstrings. I bought the romance hard. Ah, but outside forces worked hard to keep them apart. Romeo and Juliet is the classic romance which featured a star-crossed plot. Our lovers conspire to be together but the world (outside forces) conspire to keep them apart. I read another book called “Push not the River” where Anna was in love with Jan, but outside forces (political forces and family) conspire to keep them apart.

Star-aligned:
In this romantic plot, the “fates” conspire to bring together two very different, strong-willed, and mismatched individuals. Here, our mismatched couple meets, and eventually find mutual understanding as they come to learn more about each other. In this plot, outside forces conspire to bring our couple together.

Rags to Riches:
One half of our couple is typically disadvantaged, however they are a hidden gem with talent and moral fiber to spare. They have a heart of gold. Think of Cinderella. The other half of our couple is not disadvantaged, either having money, power or some type of prestige, but they are missing ‘that’ something which is usually what our half possesses, for example, a warm and giving heart.

Princess and the Peon
This is the Cinderella plot in reverse. The main character possesses some type of advantage – power or prestige, but seeks a quest to find out what they are missing in their life. Along that quest, they find their other half, but it will take some doing before they are willing to see the gem right in front of them.

Own worst enemy
Our hero or heroine must overcome their own personal inner conflicts, doubts and fears before they can find the right person for them. Will a drive to fulfill their duty or quest win over the tug of their heartstrings?

Question for you: In the Movie, “When Harry met Sally,” Harry and Sally have a talk about the following: Can men and women be friends? Harry believes they can’t because sex gets in the way. – Do you agree with Harry or do believe like Sally does, that they can be friends without sex getting in the way?
