About This Newsletter

My banner for the Action/Adventure Newsletter.

“There are risks and costs to action. But they are far less than long range risks of comfortable inaction.” – John F. Kennedy

Action: The state of doing; organized activity to accomplish an objective.

Adventure: An undertaking of a hazardous nature; an unusual or exciting experience.

The Action/Adventure genre is full of tropes that are representative of the genre. A trope is a concept that occurs across the genre in mostly all the stories. Tropes are used often to create a sense of familiarly and excitement for readers. This newsletter will look at some familiar troupes in the Action/Adventure genre.

I’m SantaBee Author IconMail Icon and I’m your Action/Adventure Guest Editor this week.

Letter from the editor

A troupe is a concept that occurs across a genre in most of the stories featured in that genre. Here are some common troupes used in the Action/Adventure genre:

CHOSEN ONE
A hero/heroine is destined for greatness and has a significant role to play in a very important quest. Think Frodo in Lord of the Rings

DAMSEL IN DISTRESS
A female character requires a rescue by the hero. This can cross genres with the romance genre and so I would say, the focus here is on the action/adventure and not necessarily on the characters falling in love.

MENTOR
A wise mentor guides and trains the hero/heroine on their journey. Obi-Wan from Star Wars, A New Hope comes to mind.

MYSTERIOUS ARTIFACT
The main characters go on a quest to find or protect an important object. Indiana Jones comes to mind here.

EVIL OVERLORD
A powerful villain seeks to destroy the world and our hero/heroine must prevent that.

BAND OF MISFITS
The hero/heroine forms a diverse group of allies to stand against the villain. I’m thinking X-Men here.

RACE AGAINST TIME
The hero/heroine must complete a mission that has a strict deadline to prevent a disaster.

I generally use movies as examples to highlight action/adventure troupes, but there are plenty of books that follow these formulas, for example, Ian Fleming’s James Bond books. These troupes pull on our sense of excitement and keep us on the edge of our seats hoping the good guys win in the end.

Question for you: What’s your favorite Action/Adventure movie and why do you like it?

Thank you very much for including my short story, Escape, in your Editor's Picks section.

You’re welcome.

Person against person, often one against many.

I am a complete sucker for the person against nature antagonist force storyline. I have written so many of those, because they are much easier to make realistic. I also like person-against-person. But there is one I do that is more horror than action-adventure and that is person-against-supernatural. Demons, ghosts, the unexplainable. It does mean a lot of my horror reads at times like action-adventure (especially with my love of writing fight scenes), but that is one that is another genre.
