Quote for the week:
"Black cats and goblins and broomsticks and ghosts
Covens of witches with all of their hosts
You may think they scare me. You're probably right.
Black cats and goblins on Halloween night
Trick or treat!"

Halloween is often associated with horror stories, but it is a great setting for mysteries as well. Autumn is beautiful, but also mysterious. The days are growing shorter, there is a chill in the air, and leaves are falling from the trees. A guilty character is more likely to escape under cover of darkness, and a pile of leaves might be where they hid a body or other evidence of a crime.
Around Halloween, people expect to see and hear strange things, so more sinister strange things might go unnoticed. Weird noises outside are likely to be blamed on trick or treaters. An oddly dressed individual skulking in the streets is likely to be someone in costume heading to a Halloween party. Or are they?
Halloween is one time of the year when many homeowners are more likely than usual to open their doors to strangers. A person with evil intent might simply wait behind a group of trick or treaters.
At Halloween parties, people wear costumes, masks, and makeup that often make them completely unrecognizable, even to people who know them well. A bulky costume might also be a way of hiding stolen goods.
Alcohol often goes along with adult and teen Halloween parties, which might lead to bad choices and difficulty recalling events of the night. A murder that happened outside a bar in my hometown during a Halloween party in 2007 is still unsolved today.
Something to try: Write a murder mystery that takes place on Halloween.
