Affection Power
It's winter cold season again!
While this season has its own beauty, it is the one I appreciate the least among the four seasons: summer, autumn spring, and winter.
Here in the Philippines, we don't have snow—just the cold winds. However, this season often makes me feel lazy, uninspired, and prone to procrastination. As a result, some of my tasks remain unfinished and are much harder for me to complete during this time.
I am amazed by those who live in countries with winter and wonder how they manage to cope. I also wonder whether this season affects their moods. Because whether we like it or not, winter often comes with feelings of sadness and depression. Although I consider myself a positive person, I am still human and can be affected by my weaknesses during this time. Perhaps it's due to the trauma of a broken family that I faced when I was a child, which makes me think I would struggle to live in a place with a harsh winter.
I have five thoughts for you to consider so that we can overcome the challenges of this cold season.
I called it the Affection Power, and I believe everyone needs it.
This Affection Power comes from warmth:
1. Listening: We all need someone to listen to us. This is how we pour out our thoughts, especially when our minds feel full. Listening to others allows us to express ourselves and feel warmth, even in this cold season.
2.Empathic Words: We need encouraging words to lift us up, not to tear us down. Sometimes, when we are in despair and filled with doubts and insecurities, we need someone to contradict the negative thoughts we have, reassuring us that we are capable and worthy.
3. Hugs: This simple gesture has a powerful effect on our brains, releasing chemicals that energize our hearts and help us feel alive and positive again. Hugs from loved ones can be especially comforting. When I feel sad and overwhelmed, my little girl often says, "You need my power hug, Mommy," and it brings me relief.
4. Company: While we can spend time alone—especially if we're used to being loners, but nothing compares to the comfort that others can provide. Being around with others stimulates our brains to produce chemicals or the Oxytocin hormone (love chemicals) that foster feelings of comfort, security, and happiness. This reminds me of why God created woman-companionship for Adam.
5. Love: In this cold winter season, love is what we need most. Love keeps the world turning. Without love-for ourselves, for those who depend on us, and for the Love that God bestows upon us every day, we may struggle to stand up and face the challenges life throws our way. This Love is the ultimate power that God has given us, and it is residing in our hearts.
It's wonderful that here in the WDC world, we can find this Affection Power. We can listen to each other's stories and share our own. Let's just choose to use encouraging and uplifting words to empower one another. We can share virtual hugs and foster connections that bring comfort and love to each other.
