Romance: an ardent emotional attachment between two people. A love affair.
Welcome to January ! This year I’m taking inspiration for my newsletters from the letter “W” and this Newsletter is titled: “Warm and Yearning.” At the start of a new year, we’re yearning for warmth in the heart of a cold month, and in many ways, romance starts with a warm feeling, a yearning that might be noticed, but unfamiliar. It’s an uncertain feeling in the pit of our stomach that tells us this new person is intriguing to us. We want to be around them more, and yet we hold back a little, uncertain of what will happen and hesitant to break our own hearts.
I wanted to start off the year with your thoughts on romance. Do you read? Why do you find romances warm? Familiar? Appealing? A bit THANK YOU to everyone on my newsfeed to answered my questions.

REASONS TO READ
For us readers of romance, there are so many reasons why we do. Some read to escape to another time and place in hopes of a happy ending. Some read to connect with that feeling of hope or positivity that a romance leaves us with. Romance is an exploration of feelings and one way to develop a deeper understanding in making emotional connections is to allow a romance story to “take us away.” Some people read romance stories as stress relief. Whatever the reason you read (or watch) a romance, you can expect a positive story with a happy ending that leaves feeling “warmth.”
One of the first feelings you encounter when you meet the romantic characters of your story is a feeling of “warmth.” Readers become attached to our hero and heroine, rooting for them when the going gets tough. That initial feeling – warmth – really does infuse us emotionally, as readers, with good vibes, positivity, and hope.
So what about romance infuses us with warmth?
Ichabod Crane   starts us off with: “Never tried to write of romance. Most romance I watch I suppose would be a romcom.”
Romantic Comedy is a popular subgenre. Movies like “Pretty Woman,” “While you were Sleeping,” and “When Harry Met Sally,” still resonate with us today, years after they came out. They tickle the funny bone with enduring characters that touch our heartstrings as we watch the character fall in love.
Elycia Lee ☮ CNY Coming!  says: “I swear I watched intellectual movies before I married my hubby. Ever since I had to watch zombie series with their head constantly getting blow off. I have to watch romance to sooth my soul. I don’t care if they cliches. They comfort me because most of the time, they have happy endings… I like to watch two very good-looking characters falling for each other.”
Zombie movies or Romance? I’ll take romance. Can zombies fall in love? I think that’s one of the main attractions to watching/reading a romance – enjoying two very good-looking characters falling for each other. Leaves me feeling warm.
Joto-Kai  chimed in with: “Usually it needs something to sugarcoat it, e.g. fantasy or science fiction, though I might blunder into loving a romcom now and again.”
There’s that RomCon again. You can find romance can drive a science fiction or fantasy plot or it can be a secondary plot that helps to emotionally develop the main characters.
