About This Newsletter

A guestbook on Writing.Com is an editable item like a forum or in and out for a visitor to leave greetings and comments.

Guestbooks

All visits to portfolios and item views are kept anonymous here on Writing.Com. That ensures that anyone can browse freely without feeling self-conscious. The only way that someone knows that a reader came through is if they leave a review or at least a rating.

Reviews can be set to anonymous, but careful! Never use that function to harass someone. If an anonymous review is rude or demeaning, the writer can lodge a complaint and the anonymous reviewer will lose their ability to send such a review. Why do we even have that if it leads to problems? Because some people have constructive (not rude) comments to items, but they don't want to be known for a variety of reasons.

This brings us to Guestbooks. Some members have an item, usually prominently displayed on their landing page, that allows visitors to leave a greeting or a comment or ask a question.

The most common item type for that is the forum. Those have a lot of space for greetings and replies. In a forum, one first post can spawn into lengthy conversations over many post and reply posts.

The second item type is the In and Out. Those are neat too because all of the comments are readily visible. On the other hand, there is no function to reply to a post directly. It's a little more passive, but definitely also neat for the next visitors to have a quick overview who came before them.

Guestbooks are as diverse and creative as each single one of us here on the site. There are the simple, "Leave a greeting" headers and those who explain a little more about the writer behind the username and handle. This is where some people choose to show their face, maybe give their real first name, and explain how they came to writing and what they plan to accomplish with their writing.

Go visit some of those guestbooks. Let the people know you were there. Don't be a stranger.

What kind of information would you like to see in a guestbook?
