Letter from the editor

Dear Reader,

Picture the scene.

Our very own Max Griffin 🏳️‍🌈 working up the nerve, the enthusiasm and the creativity to step into the kitchen to make his first ever batch of cupcakes.

Getting the recipe, obtaining the perfect ingredients, putting it all together with a lot of love, delicately decorating — all the time imagining the happy faces of members of his writing group devouring them and praising his culinary prowess.

And then, the phone call.

"The roads are impassable, Max, sorry, but nobody can get to your place."

After all that, what Max has is a plate of cupcakes and the solicitude of fellow WDC members.

*Down*

*Right* "Note: How I spent my morning...My first time ever making..." *Left*

*Up*

But me? *Smirk2* I don't offer my commiseration. Instead, I pounce. Not on the plate of cupcakes, that plate is in the US of A and I'm in India. Nope. I pounce on the opportunity.

This, I think to myself, is what I've been looking for, for my Drama Newsletter.

This gives me an alliterative title. Did you notice that, as you came along?

Then, it gives me the perfect build-up and anti-climax. Weren't you with Max Griffin 🏳️‍🌈 getting that recipe, obtaining those perfect ingredients, donning an apron, messing up the kitchen, cleaning it up again, all the time thinking 'it's going to be worth it' ... ? Didn't the fragrance of the cake waft along as you imagined the scene, and didn't your mouth water?

And when you heard what the caller said, didn't your heart go 'thump' into your shoes, like Max Griffin 🏳️‍🌈's heart did? But wait, that's not the end. That's just the climax. Then you needed the sympathy, so you put it on the newsfeed and received comments, suggestions, and some fellow feeling.

And an 'aha' from one sneaky Mod who thought she could use it for her Drama Newsletter, and just did ...

What's more, she's asking you to comment below and tell her what you'd have done, if you'd got this idea.

Oh, and in case you need to know what happened to those cupcakes:

On 2/23/25 at 8:44pm, Max Griffin 🏳️‍🌈 Author Icon wrote:

Since you plan to mention this in your newsletter...we gave six cupcakes to a neighbor today. They have six little girls, so they were happy to get them.

I'd already given away three to other people. Mr. Gene had one and I had one. So now Mr. Gene has one left to eat. Problem solved.

Max Griffin
