Quote for the week:
"Mystery spread its cloak across the sky.
We lost our way.
Shadows fell from trees.
They knew why."

In a mystery story, it might be necessary for characters to hide their identity. Both protagonists and villains may run into situations where they do not want to be recognized.
The hero or protagonist might be working under cover in order to infiltrate a criminal or enemy organization. Someone who has witnessed a crime may need to go into witness protection to stay safe until they can testify or until criminals who have threatened them can be caught. In cases like these, the character will need more than a simple disguise. In addition to changing their appearance, they will need a complete new identity along with convincing identification documents.
Someone who needs to hide their identity for only a short time may be able to use a simple disguise. Bank robbers have worn Halloween masks, ski masks, or pantyhose over their faces. Remember that a character's face may not be their only identifying characteristic. Masked robbers have been identified by their voices, general body type, or movements. I read about one case where a bank robber was identified as someone who had police training by the way he handled his gun.
If you want your characters to use theatrical or movie makeup such as Robin Williams wore in "Mrs. Doubtfire," remember that a lot of skill is required to apply this type of makeup. It also takes a lot of time to apply and remove. Makeup that looks realistic on stage or a movie set may not look the same in real life, especially if it needs to be on for a long time.
Something to try: Write a mystery story where a character is in disguise. |
