Every problem has in it the seeds of its own solution. If you don't have any problems, you don't get any seeds. ~~Norman Vincent Peale
To the wise, life is a problem; to the fool, a solution. ~~Marcus Aurelius
The solution often turns out more beautiful than the puzzle. ~~Richard Dawkins

Sometimes, when you are dealing with life, one thing to do, when you aren't sure just what to do is to write it out. Condensing the thoughts, expanding on others, and letting the poem take the lead can help to figure out the problem and/or the possible solutions. Sometimes, it is all about the specifics and others, just the generalities can help the writer focus.
And this, in turn, may help someone else in a similar scenario. Just enough parts of it may spark a solution for not only yourself, but for another in a similar situation.
A friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with cancer. He's scared. He's determined. His world has upended itself. He's been writing a LOT of poetry as he attempts to deal with all the issues and ramifications. It helps him keep his focus on where it needs to be while also letting him express the fears.
He's also writing some of his best poetry ever. (Although I am quite sure that's the last thing on his mind at the moment.) In following his words, he's traveled a very dark tunnel, been through all the possible 'end of his world' journeys and is now facing the beginnings of chemo and radiation with something of a more possible attitude. I think he's talked himself into it, but who cares? He's found the pathway towards getting through the 'getting through' it.
Another friend of mine wrote her way through a very high-risk pregnancy. And Ladybug is now almost two and doing great! The writing/journaling helped her get through some scary times.
Personally, I've found that it can help even with things that aren't life-threatening, just stress-inducing miasmas of indecision, doubt, and 'which way do I go nows.' Writing it out can actually put a little distance to something and let you look at the what-ever-it-is from a slightly distanced perspective. This perspective can help clear the air, so to speak, and give you a chance to take a breath or three before diving back in.
Even when it doesn't lead you to a clear choice or a decision you can live with, it helps lighten the load. Think of it as blathering to your best friend and getting it out of your system. That and you might just write some stellar poetry in the process.

Fivesixer writes: A sweet and wonderful idea, for sure (the notebook). Definitely makes me miss being in love. When my youngest brother graduated from high school, I gave him a leather-bound journal full of all the poems I'd written for/about him as a gift. I'd recopied them all by hand from old notebooks. I wonder if he still has it.
Hmmm . . . me too!
Monty says: One of the best days I had before losing, was never really topped by any other day. We made a lot of valentines day.
This makes me smile!!! |
