About This Newsletter

Hello. I joined WDC in September of 2006. My name is Carol St.Ann, and and I write for this newsletter once a month. This year, 2025, I plan to focus on the craft with a hard focus toward publication. Please feel free to hit me up with any issues you’d like to see addressed, and I’ll do my best to research it for you.

Letter from the editor

We’re going back to the basics.
In Murder Mysteries, the killer is typically motivated by some perceived gain or satisfaction, but there is one other reason many writers pass over.

Let’s take a quick look at the most commonly written reasons.

Revenge.
The perpetrator intends to inflict damage, injury or death upon a person who in some way has insulted, harmed, bullied, or otherwise offended them. Or perhaps even murdered or harmed someone they love.

Greed.
This doesn’t always involve the rich parental figure. Financial murders can also include rival gang members, an over zealous bank robber, and of course the long-lost sibling or heir to the fortune. These can also involve heirloom treasures and material goods perceived as valuable only to the individual.

Love.
A desperate husband knows his wife is being unfaithful. The jealous boyfriend who finds his girl in the embrace of someone else. The sibling tired of being in the shadows of the favorite daughter/son.

Serial.
Mental Illness is clearly part of all killings, but serial killing truly involves a deranged mind.

Random
Random can include all the above except, I think, serial (which is by nature meticulous and methodical).

And the often overlooked accidental murder. We must include this as a possibility. Surely even this scenario is a likely cause for a cover-up by the accidental perp. A moment of rage. A surprise visit from someone perceived as a burglar. Rough-housing that went too far. Accidental overdose given due to careless but unintended distraction.

I’ve touched on the most common (sans politics and murders for hire) as the main mystery reasons murder is committed. If you can think of others, send me an email, I would love to open up a discussion on this.

See you next month.
