This is my first opportunity to fill in as a guest editor for the Contest and Activities Newsletter and I’m very excited to do so. I am amazed at how vibrant the WDC Community is. There is always lot to do, from organizing your portfolio, reading, reviewing, entering writing contests, blogging, and visiting the newsfeed to find out the latest happenings here on the Website. Today, I thought I’d visit some items you can create with your membership.
I’m StephBee and I’m your guest editor for the Contest/Activities Newsletter this week.

There’s a lot to do here on Writing.com and it can be overwhelming. When you come to the website, there’s a menu on the left that helps you find items. If you travel down past the Nano Counter you’ll see a link to “Create a New Item.” When you click here, you have a lot of options to create items. Here are a couple:
STATIC ITEMS
Static items include all your written items from flash fiction stories, short stories, poems, essays, recipes, scripts, blogs, etc. Static items are the “meat and potatoes” of your portfolio. Static items are the items that readers and reviewers come to your portfolio to find.
TIP: Here’s a great link that explains the differences between free and different paid accounts. "Free and Paid Membership Benefits"
CAMPFIRE CREATIVE
This type of item is a round robin style of storytelling where different authors write different chapters of a story.
PRODUCT REVIEW
A product review offers you an opportunity to share your thoughts on products you’ve recently used. Members have reviewed books, music albums, and movies. They require the product’s ASIN from Amazon.
IN & OUT
These items are intended to be an interactive feature for lists or rolling stories. They’re often used as guest books and can be used as a place to collect contest entries.
MADLIB
A madlib is a story with missing words that the reader fills in. They often tell a humorous or a surprising story.
POLLS
Polls are a great opportunity to ask the community a question and get feedback on it. A poll offers up to 9 voting options. To vote, you should be a member and logged in.
WORD SEARCH
This is a great opportunity to offer a fun, relaxing puzzle and attract readers, fans, and favorites to your port. Pick a topic, stay on theme, and be creative.
CROSWORD PUZZLE
Crosswords are another opportunity to have fun and attract readers. Your crossword can be on any topic, but creating crosswords that interest the community are usually the most popular.
QUIZ
Quizzes are another opportunity to generate interest in your port, folders, and stories. You can create a quiz on a popular item in your port, or a topic on pop culture.
You can find more information on different items here:
"Item Types and Their Uses"
Question: Do you have one of the above items in your port? Feel free to send in a link in the Feedback section, and I’ll share it in my next Contest & Activities newsletter.
