Dear Me, that hurts!

This year, I was privileged to be one of the readers for the Dear Me contest. I enjoyed the wonderful creativity the writers used to inspire themselves to reach their goals. All included more writing. One thing was missing though; knowing when to stop, stretch, and take a walk. There were some that understood the importance of getting away from the computer for a while, to 'smell the roses', but it usually dealt with their mental health, not the physical. This letter deals with the physical.

Ergonomics may be a new word for many of you, but it's one writers need to learn if they intend to write, revise and finish a book - and keep the pain to a minimum. Everyone has heard of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, right? That's only one of the painful reasons to study ergonomics. Pain is always easier to prevent than to cure; pay attention to your body.

These links provide everything we need to know about keeping the glare of monitors out of our eyes, right down to the color of the walls and how to hang pictures and mirrors for our own good. They explain the best way to set up your work station to avoid CIRSIs. Employers have implemented these tactics for years, but not much has been said about home workers. Some of us spend more time on a computer than the average employee - and employee's take their breaks.

Just as you avoid repetitiveness in your choice of words while writing, it's something to watch for in your physical environment as well. It will cause pain eventually - in both activities.

What are RSIs?

RSIs are one type of MSD (Musculockeletal Disorder). MSD are injuries and disorders of muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage and spinal discs that result from repetitive motions, working in awkward positions, using excessive force or lifting heavy objects. MSDs are different from other types of injuries that result from falls, blows, trips and slips in that MSDs are cumulative, develop over time and increase with repetitive stress. CIRSIs are particular types of RSIs that include computer-induced RSIs. These include injuries that develop because of repetitive use and constant interaction with improperly positioned computer and desk arrangements, such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, Cervical Disc Herniation and Lower Back Pain.

*Check2* These members are at the very edge of falling off the Newbie Page. They are a month old and most have had little feedback. I'm sure they would welcome encouragement. They aren't all perfect pieces yet, but they're off to good starts.

No written feedback this time, and that is feedback too. It tells me the topic was boring. *Smile* Any ideas?

We always appreciate feedback, thanks!
