About This Newsletter

** Image ID #1301304 Unavailable **

Starting November 21st, I'll be a regular Editor for the Contests & Activities Newsletter, and I thought I'd host a contest in honor of the position. Each month, I'll focus on one type of Writing.Com activity. Contestants will enter that type of activity for a chance to win gps and more! To gear up for that contest, this Newsletter will discuss tips for hosting and entering contests.

Hosting

A few tips for hosting a successful contest:

Idea - Your first step is to come up with an idea. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the most original idea. Sometimes a simple idea works best. Mostly you’ll want something that most can understand and draw inspiration from. Your goal is to inspire others to write or create so that you’ll get the most entries as possible.

Rules - Rules are completely up to you. Look around at other contests and decide for yourself what rules will be fair and reasonable. Things to consider:

Deadline Give your contestants enough time to come up with a good entry.
Item size - What size item are you willing to read?
Rating or content limits - If there is a rating or subject matter you prefer not to read, let your readers know in advance.
Item type - If you are expecting only short stories, be sure to let your contestants know! Be specific.

Keep your rules simple and clear.

Advertise - Use Auto-Reward, BidClick Advertising System, signatures, Contest Listing pages, BioBlocks, Billboards, Handles, etc. to promote your contest. The more people that see it, the more entires you're likely to receive.

Prizes - Be sure your prizes are enough of an incentive to make contestants want to enter, but not too high that you can’t afford to give them out after the contest is over. It's not wise to rely on donations, and it’s not exactly polite to ask for them outright. Instead, you can say “Donations are greatly appreciated!” or "Prizes may increase if donations are received."

Judging - Be sure you allow plenty of time for judging. It’s best to send a review or even just a short comment for each entry, letting your contestants know their entries were read and considered.

Entering

A few tips for entering contests:

Read the rules very carefully! Be sure you're clear on rules regarding item size, content rating, item type, and deadlines.

Check and double-check everything! Make certain your entry won't be disqualified before it can be judged.

Even little things count! Don't forget to choose appropriate ratings, genres, title and intro. Those little things can have an affect on judges' decisions.

One last tip! The “Contest” genre should not be used for contest entries. That genre is generally used for the contest itself.

That's it for this Contests & Activities Newsletter. Best of luck in your contest endeavors!
