The other day I overheard a cadre of people beratting Valetine's Day as day created by florists and chocolatiers to up the sale of their products, and that may be true. Like most holidays there is a commercial tie in. However, I say thank you to them because we’re all the better for it. In this busy world of ours we need one day to remind us of those who love us best and to tell them that we LOVE them. How many times have you heard, “________(fill in the blank) should know I love her/him/them because I buy things/am around/cook/etc. for him/them/her all the time. Well, you know what folks, we all like to hear the words “I love you” from time to time. We all skate that thin line between love and taking for granted when it comes to those people in our lives that make Life worth the trouble and the heartache. Why are we afraid of using the word "love" with people who are so important to us? The answer may be as simple as the corruptive use of the word "love." We bandy the word about like it's a frisbee; we love chocolate, cars, restaurants, movies, etc. You can love an inanimate object. We LIKE these things but we don't love them, or if we do we are in more trouble than we realize. The other problem is fear of rejection, or worse, redicule. Friday I told one of the other teachers who happens to be a dear friend that I loved her. I said this in front of the students and they were appalled that I would say I loved another woman! Sadly, society has condensed the word "love" into a single definition instead of the 20+ that are actually attached to the word.
If I could change anything about this site it would be separating Love and Romance into two genres. I say that because we, as writers, should broaden our love poetry to include all those who love us in spite of what we are and despite what we are not. When was the last time you wrote a love poem about someone other than a significant other that you loved them? These words have magic in them that can heal a thousand wounds, refresh a stale heart, and put wings on the fallen. It is also far more challenging to write a love poem to a parent, best friend, or sibling than the paramour because the love for these is far more complicated and often shrouded in a pall of pride.
As you’re planning that perfect evening for your true love, take time to remember those who love you truly. Write a poem about a mother’s love, or one for a sibling, or that special friend who lets you call at 2 am when your heart has been broken asunder…..again. Yes, love is a many splendored thing and a many faceted thing. It makes the world go round and it is the sweetest thing we’ll ever do.
