The Darker Side of Romance
Supernatural romance tales are on the rise. Non-human heroes are taking the place of corporate raiders and rugged men in record numbers. Once thought to be only for the horror genre, the supernatural storyline is becoming popular among romance readers, and writers.
There are many different supernatural creatures you can use in your romance writing. Not only the popular ones, like Vampires and Werewolves. All it takes is a little research to find some of the more interesting creatures.
A word of warning. Most supernatural creatures have very dark sides to them. Any romance written with them as a hero/heroine should be considered a horror/romance story. This is not by any means a complete list, only the ones I've noticed most often in my reading travels.
Vampires: An undead being, a Vampire is a creature who feeds on the living to survive. They often either drink blood or absorb the life-force to sustain their lives. Because they are dead, they are often depicted as being very pale and cold to the touch. They are super-strong, are often able to physically transform into other beings, and are able to posses their victim through the use of seduction.
Werewolves: A Werewolf is a human who can transform into a wolf through the use of magic, by being cursed, or if bitten by another Werewolf. Though most traditional Werewolves can only transform during the full moon, modern Werewolves can make the change at will. Often the Werewolf hero is a tortured soul who needs the heroine to help him overcome his affliction.
Ghosts: Ghosts are a popular supernatural romance character. Being in love with someone, or something, who cannot return that love physically can make for a sad romantic tale. A ghost hero/heroine can be a past love, present love, or even a future one. It is one of the more versatile characters to use in a romance because it can really be whatever you want it to be.
Shapeshifters: While Werewolves can transform into wolves, Shapeshifters can transform into pretty much anything they wish. I've read stories where the Shapeshifter could even change into inanimate objects. They can be good, bad, or just plain neutral. The sky's the limit with these fun characters.
As with any genre, romance stories can have more than one facet attached to them. Writing a romance story with a side of horror isn't difficult. But balancing the love story with the darker side of the hero/heroine will take a little skill, and a love of the darker side of romance. But it is well worth the effort.
Thank you for taking the time to read. Happy Writing!
