Letter from the editor

Silly things happen to you when you least expect them. And kids say the silliest things when you least expect it. And family, any family, can do strange things, to boot.

I have enjoyed my summer at home so far, with the kids. My oldest son has really become quite the chatty Carl and tells all kinds of stories each night before bed. He's stopped being interested in having us read to him. Instead, he'd rather tell us one of his wonderfully imaginative tales.

Tonight, we had friends in from Chicago and, on the way home, he decided to tell my husband about my fear of bugs.

"Daddy," he said. "Mommy saw a big yucky bug on the window and she said, 'Ahhhhhh! It's a big yucky bug! Then Jeremiah came and smacked it off and it flew away. Then it was gone." (Jeremiah is one of my coworkers who came and painted my living room for me.)

"Oh really?" My husband said, "What noise did Mommy make when she saw that bug?"

"Ahhhh! It's a big, yucky bug!" my son replied, raising his voice to make it higher, like mine.

When we got home, it was time for bed. As Jason got my oldest ready for bed, Ethan began telling him the story of Kyle Bush getting a new tractor. He drove it and then it broke. Then Jimmy Johnson came and fixed it and then he crashed it. Then Jimmy Johnson had to borrow my husband's tractor until his was fixed.

This story went on for about fifteen minutes until Jason decided it would probably never end unless he left the room. It didn't matter to Ethan, though. You could hear him telling the story down the hall in the living room.

During the day, when I'm home with him, we spend an hour coming up with a story in the morning, after breakfast. Usually it starts out with me and him going for a walk and then, somehow, race cars, tractors, and lately, tornadoes make their way into the stories. Tree branches have fallen on my car during this journey, even though we're walking. Jimmy Johnson or Tony Stewart have magically appeared to crash into us. We've gone many places and taken many long, long trips that we wouldn't normally take because they're actually quite far! One day, according to Ethan, we walked over 100 miles!

Spending time with my family has become quite important to me, and that is why this will be my last Comedy Newsletter. I have enjoyed writing for you over the past two years or so, but it's time for me to call it a wrap. Hopefully, the moderator who replaces me will be funnier and have better ideas because my well hath run dry.

Thank you for allowing me to entertain, educate, and make you think. It has been my pleasure!
