Letter from the editor

And they called it puppy love.

Or so sang Donny Osmond way back in the 70’s.

This is the Romance/Love newsletter and I’d like to focus on the love part of it this time. Love comes in many forms: parent and child, friendship, partners. To me one of the most enduring and special kinds of love comes in the form of animals.

Animals love unconditionally. As long as they have food, water and some love in return, they will adore us. They don’t care if you’re having a bad hair day or your “fat” jeans fit too tight. They don’t care if you’re not wearing makeup. They see through the outer and focus on the inner beauty.

I have four pets. Lucy, my Boston terrier, is my headstrong teenager. She doesn’t care for learning tricks and will listen to me only if it suits her. We had a rocky start when she first came into my life nearly 9 years ago. After about two years I became deathly ill. She would lie on the side of my bed and keep watch over me. That was our turning point. Now we share a strong bond.

Harley, my Chihuahua, is my Mama’s boy. While Lucy has an independent streak, Harley has to know where I am at all times. His favorite place is my lap. While all three dogs love to chase balls Harley is the one who would have me throw it all day if he had his druthers.

Hershey, my dachshund, is my hunter. He could spend all day outside exploring and hunting the field mice and rats that find their way to my yard. He is a clown deluxe. While I would never tell this to the other two, Hershey is my baby. He is one of those rare pets who come along with which the bond is stronger.

Fluffy, is a Betta fish. He is my tranquility. He is a bright blue to turquoise color with red and purple markings. Believe it or not that fish has personality! I take pictures of him and instead of the side shots I was getting at first, he is actually posing now. Even though I can’t pet him or hug on him, he is special to me as well. He calms me. I can watch him for hours.

While I imagine I could get along without animals in my life, I just can’t envision my life without them. Each animal that has shared time with me has taught me lessons about life. How to enjoy it, how to play, how to take naps, how to see through the material and enjoy the simple things. These animals, yes even the fish, are my kids. I couldn’t imagine my world without any of them.
