Welcome to the Contests & Activities Newsletter. I'm spidey, and I'm your Editor this week. I'd like to discuss holiday contests & activities.
Holidays are National and International events that can inspire and bring people together, whether it's in 'real life' or here at Writing.Com! As we're entering the traditional holiday season, we'll begin seeing more and more holiday-related activities, though there are a great deal of those all year round. Let's take a look at how you can successfully run and participate in holiday activities.
Be Creative - For the host of a holiday activity, it's important to be creative and specific in your activities & contests. You'll be competing with other activities for participation. One way to attract participants is to offer a unique prompt. Try to choose something that is interesting to pique interest, but also open enough to allow variety.
For the participant, creativity is also important. Judges and hosts will be reading through a good deal of entries (hopefully), and you'll want yours to stand out from the others. A few ways you can achieve this: Interpret the prompt in an unusual way (without breaking rules or prompts!); Write about something personal, as it can often inspire more passionate writing.
Celebrate the Spirit - Draw on the feelings the specific holiday evokes in you. Try to capture the spirit of the holiday being highlighted.
Bring the Community Together - For many, celebrating holidays is about bringing people together. This can be utilized in holiday activities here at Writing.Com! Activities & Contests that involve bringing people together and that require group/partner participation can often draw a lot of participation.
The 'Other' Holidays - Not everyone celebrates the most popular holidays. Try focusing on the lesser-known holidays or even major ones that fall into the shadows of the major ones that get all the limelight.
Don't Forget! - Keep your eye on forums & interactives for upcoming holiday activities! Try browsing the Holiday genre or sorting Forum listings by "Newest First" to keep updated on the newest Holiday contests & activities!

My last newsletter gave advice on awarding a variety of prizes.
I personally feel it's important for the contest host to give the winner a choice of a "gp equivalent" of the prize. Don't get me wrong, I love awardicons and merit badges and recognise their value. It's just that at times I'm struggling to keep up my upgrade and if I'm given an awardicon for an item and then it disappears from my port, it doesn't help much! - Sonali ~ THANKFUL SONALI Library Class! A great suggestion! I think "gp equivalent" is a great choice to give winners.
Thanks for the NaNoWriMo group information. I signed up for two of them. ~ Thomas You're welcome! I listed them again just in case anyone missed them last time.
Thanks for including my 100 word contest in your newsletter
