December 21, 2012 is winter solstice. It is also the supposed end of the Mayan calendar. The Mayan calendar shows epochs and cycles; and is divided in seven ages in which long counts and short counts separate cycles. This is an extremely basic explanation and does not cover all the complexities of this beautiful and well-organized calendar.
The December 21, 2012 date refers to the end of a 13-year cycle in the Long Count Calendar. The end referred to here is the end of a cycle, but some individuals have suggested that it refers to the end of the world or of earth itself. This brings me to an intriguing observation about human nature. Human beings seem fascinated by endings, whether these endings concern cycles, planets or simply love affairs.
I sometimes suspect that we humans find endings more interesting then beginnings. At least we attempt to fit every catastrophic event occurring on the planet today into a prediction about the end of time or the end of the world. However, we never apply the wisdom we have gathered in our own lives about endings and beginnings.
As each day ends, a new day begins. It does not matter if we live by a solar day, one day ends at sunset and another day begins at that moment, or a day the ends at midnight with another beginning at 12:00:01 AM. Endings, not matter how catastrophic or devastating, precede new beginnings.
How does the world end? On the other hand, does the world really end? Science Fiction and Fantasy writers have used the end of the world scenario numerous times down through the years creating some interesting and thought provoking stories.
