Letter from the editor

Winter is here or will be here on December 21, 2008. It is cold and according to several myths a time of mourning. In other myths, winter is when the world ends. However, one thinks of winter, it is a difficult time for all creatures.

In winter, the ground lays fallow and baron, nothing grows. In many places, it snows and freezing winds blow. Some creatures go into hibernation and sleep until spring. For other animals, it is a time when their fur thickens to protect them for the cold. My grandfather, who farmed for many years, said he could tell how bad the winter was going to be by the thickness of an animal’s fur.

In winter, food is scarce and difficult to find. Some animals move down from the high country, while others make do with what they can dig from under the snow, hunt or scavenge. Winter is a difficult time for both humans and animals. It is a time of survival, death, reassessment and mourning.

Our ancestors, in most cases, had a more difficult time in winter then most of us have today. That is why the myths of winter speak of death and mourning. However, they also speak of hope and rebirth because after winter comes spring. Eventually winter ends and plants sprout from the earth, sometimes from beneath the melting snow.
