Reading a horror story, one that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the last page, is what every horror fan dreams of. Being scared, to the point that sleep is almost impossible, makes the read all the more worthwhile. Does that make us crazy? You bet!!!
My name is Darkin, and I’m your host this week for the Horror Newsletter.

Fear Factors
Has anyone else noticed the number of reality shows on television that are aimed at scaring people? I have. What does that tell me? It tells me that fear is still a very popular venue.
Finding what makes people afraid is the name of the game when it comes to horror writing. Getting a review that says the reader couldn't sleep after reading your story is what every horror writer wants to hear. And keeping your readers afraid is what we all want to do.
I know the books all say write what you know, but sometimes even your fears aren't enough. So what do you do when you can't scare yourself?
Find out what scares other people!
I suggest starting a fear journal. All you need is a small notebook and a pencil. Then, ask your family and friends what really makes them quake in their boots! Write their fears down in your notebook. You don't have to put their names in it, just their fear. Be as specific as possible, so when you're ready to use that fear in a story you have what you need.
Don't forget television when doing this. Start watching those reality fear shows. What do they do to make those people scared? What are they using, and how are they using it? Sometimes, the simplest things are the most frightening to people. So use those simple things in your writings too.
After a while you should have a notebook filled with all types of fears, all ready for the writing. All you need to do is craft a plot around your fear pick. Give it a try, I think you'll be pleasantly, or fearfully, surprised.
Thank you for taking the time to read. Happy Writing!

Fantastic newsletter, Darkin! Great advice regarding harvesting horror, something I've, so far, been too scared to tackle. Maybe there's a story in there somewhere? Your love of the genre is an inspiration.
