All You Need Is Love

It's February, and love is in the air. Whether or not you have a significant other, there's one thing we WDCers can all agree on: we love to read, write and review.

Nathaniel Hawthorne said, "Easy reading is damn hard writing."

When a reader forgets he's reading and completely loses himself in your story, that's a job well done.

Is there a particular author you love? What is it about his or her work that compels you to turn the page? Why do some books get shelved after the first chapter while others keep you up till the wee small hours of the morning? What keeps you coming back time after time? Have you consciously thought about these things as you read? If not, you should.

When I read, I have a bright yellow highlighter at the ready. If a phrase or sentence or analogy or description speaks to me, I highlight it, then I analyze why it appealed to me. Francine Prose's Reading Like a Writer: A Guide for People Who Love Books and for Those Who Want to Write Them is an excellent resource. It teaches you how to ... well, read like a writer. Rewire your brain to notice the nuances, stockpile the subtle differences in tone and espy the elegance prolific storytellers possess. After a while the techniques become automatic. Not only will you be a more aware reader after reading this book but, by osmosis, a more seasoned writer as well, and your readers will love you for it.

Acme Author IconMail Icon says, "Thanks for another smashing newsletter, Shannon. *Smile* It's great to be reminded of what a big help a little effort can be. *Thumbsup* I'm glad you liked the NL, Acme, and thank you for your kind comments!

Michelle Broughton Author IconMail Icon says, "I gave a nice amount to a contest, I think. The problem is I'm very new here and not sure I put it in the right place to send to the contest. Is there any way to be certain?" Welcome to writing.com, Michelle. Sometimes contests have banks they want you to send the gift points to; other times the owner of the contest wants you to send the gift points directly to them. If you're not sure, email the contest/activity owner to ask what they prefer. They will point you in the right direction. And as far as the points you already sent, you can always email the owner to ask if he/she received them. You may also click on My Gift Points (top center of any open WDC window) and scroll down to see if they made it where they were supposed to. I hope this helps!
