Often romance writers create stories of newfound love, of the excitement and thrill of two people meeting and falling in love. But what about love between two who have been together for some time?
Sometimes Romance can be shown in knowing someone well, in knowing that person's likes & dislikes. I'll give you an example from my own life.
I've been married for a little over 6 years, not that long, but we're not exactly newlyweds anymore. Last Christmas, my husband gave me the most romantic gift I could have received. We're fans of Disney films, and I particularly like Tinkerbell (my husband says I have her temper). He identifies with Peter (I say it's because he'll never grow up!)
So for my Christmas gift last year, he gave me a kiss inside a velvet ring box. Instead of a ring, it contained an antique-looking thimble with the following note:
Tink,
I'm giving you a kiss with love. May Innocence, Love and Magic stay in your heart forever. If it should ever leave, I will always be around to remind you of childhood.
I love you!
Love,
Peter
His thoughtful gesture moved me to tears, because he showed that he really knew me. This year, I returned his gesture. I gave him a sparkly card in an envelope with gold glitter (pixie dust) and the following poem addressed to Peter:
A gift of magic from me to you
In return for a kiss so true.
If you find yourself in dire need,
If your heart & spirit threaten to bleed -
Just think of this gift and of me,
These are all you’ll need, you see.
A kiss, along with faith & trust,
And I’ll provide the pixie dust.
So close your eyes & take my hand -
We’ll be happily ever after, in Neverland.
Think Happy Thoughts
&
Never Grow Up!
For us, these gifts were incredibly romantic. It wasn't about finding something new, but showing that we know one another.
Keep that in mind when writing Romance/Love fiction.
