The Golden Globes
First in the year to recoginze the drama genre is the Golden Globes. Held in January, This awards ceremony is hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which is also a non-profit organization.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association began out of a desire by a handful of LA journalists to cover all aspects of the entertainment world. It came together during the 1940's and hosted its first awards presentation in 1944. In 1955, the Golden Globes expanded to honor achievements in television as well. Today, there are over 25 categories of achievement which the Globes honor. (14 in film and 11 in television)
The Globes have a historic tradition of selecting a Miss or Mr. Golden Globe, who is usually a daughter or son of a well known performer to help in the ceremony. Notable honorees include Laura Dern, Melanie Griffith, and Freddie Prinze Jr.
The SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards
After the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild host their awards. The SAG awards are unique in that they recoginze actors and stunt emsembles only. The show also gives a lifetime achievement award which is usually given to an actor who has fostered the highest ideals of the acting profession. This year the award was given to James Earl Jones. Over 100,000 members receive the final ballot.
The Academy Awards
Also known as the Oscars, the Academy Awards are the oldest and best known drama awards. The first ceremony was held in 1929. Over 270 guests attended and the presiding academy president was Douglas Fairbanks. To qualify, films must be over 40 minutes long and they must come out during the previous 12 month calendar year.
The Academy began using sealed envelopes in 1941 because the winners were leaked by the LA Times.
The first awardee for Best Actor was German Emil Jannings who was present at the ceremony because he had to go back to Germany. He received the first statuette ever presented. In 1953, the ceremony was televised for the first time. Film editing, scoring, and song were added in 1934. Best supporting actor/actress was added in 1936.
In 80 years, the awards show has only failed to take place when it was scheduled - in 1938 when flooding in LA postponed it, in 1968 out of respect for Martin Luther King's assassination, and in 1981 due to the assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan. Tickets to the ceremony are not sold to the public.
The Tony Awards
The Tony Awards are held in June and recoginze plays that are performed on Broadway. They are named after Antoinette Perry, a well-known Broadway stage actress. She first began performing in 1906 at 18. She was known for her perfection and high standards. When she died, a committee called the WING, chaired by Perry's friend, Brock Pemberton, suggested honoring her by establishing an awards presentation in her name.
The first awards were given out in 1947 at the Waldorf-Astoria. The first two years, there was no official statuette. It wasn't until the 3rd ceremony when the Drama Masks (comedy and tragedy) were given out.
In British theatre, the equivalent of the Tony Awards is The Laurence Olivier Award.
Only shows playing in one of the 39 Broadway theatres are eligable for the award.
The BAFTA Awards
The BAFTA Awards (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) are the equilvant of the American Oscars. It is normally held in February, previous to the Oscars, and honors British performers. Last years winners included Daniel Day Lewis and Tilda Swinson.

If you have a need to identify the speaker, keep it short. Use "he said," or "she replied." DO NOT put action in a dialogue tag. Keep it a separate sentence. Excellent advice on action in dialogue tags, Steph. I am guilty of doing this myself. It is something of a lazy habit, and one I aim to break!
A good book to read to get guidance on dialogue writing is "Revision and Self Editing" by James Scott Bell. Putting action in a dialogue tag is a bad habit new writers get into. The sooner you break it, the better.
