More Than Meets the Page

Romance is more than just two people falling in love. Romance is a parade of senses that sweeps the reader off into an imaginary wonderland.

Too many times a writer forgets to take all of their senses into consideration when writing romance. But just describing the two lovers alone, without describing their environment, will only net you a one-dimensional tale.

The Six Senses
Yes, you read that right. There are six senses to describe when writing romance stories.

Sight
You want to show the reader what your hero and heroine see. Not just each other, but what is around them while they are together. Are they in a cafe, a boardroom, or in the bedroom? Make sure the reader knows where they are too.

Sound
What sounds can the hero and heroine hear? Are they near a waterfall, in a busy mall, or in the forest? Dropping descriptions of the noises around them will bring the scene to life for your reader.

Smells
Odors can be romantic or ruin a mood; it all depends on the smell. Everything from the scent of your main characters to the incense the heroine lit to make the night more romantic will add to your scene and make it more realistic for your reader.

Taste
You might be thinking that taste isn't that important to a romance scene, but it is. Food and drink can be added to a scene to make it more sensual, but you can experiment in all kinds of tastes, if you desire.

Touch
This can be the best sense. The softness of hair, the silkiness of a negligee, or the roughness of an unshaven face. All of these bring the reader further into a story and they don't require a lot of description either.

Finally, The Sixth Sense
No, I'm not talking about psychic ability. But there is a type of sixth sense that people who are truly in love have. It's the way they can tell what their loved one is feeling or thinking. And it is definitely something to add to your story.

As with any descriptions, don't over do it. Add enough to show what their senses are experiencing and you can't go wrong.

Thank you for taking the time to read. Happy Writing!
