Letter from the editor

I had a dream about an army encampment. In the dream, an emperor came to the army encampment of one of his lords. The lord had not returned to the encampment yet, so the main character in the dream had to keep the emperor there until the lord returned. Therefore, the lord’s female companion arranged a wrestling match to entertain the emperor.

I woke up with the dream still running through my head. In fact, I can still see the military camp in my mind. I dream in color, so the troop uniforms the royal crests were especially vivid. This brings me to writing a description about the dream and the events going on in the camp.

To write the description of the camp, I fall back on the seven standard questions every author must answer when creating a story. Since the scene I am describing is from a dream, I start with the what question. I attempt to get as much detail into the description. The way I do this is by free writing the description.

When I free write a dream or a description from a dream I just start writing. It does not matter if what I write makes sense or is grammatically correct, because that is why you rewrite after getting down the initial description. While I am writing this type of description, I put in all the sensory detail I can and this include scent.

My dreams do not contain smells, I am not sure anyone’s dreams contain odors. I can still imagine what a military camp with horse, cooking fires and humans crowed together in a small area smells like. Since the description I am writing is not for dream interpretation, I can add details that were not in the dream.

Ask & Answer

sarahreed writes: Starting a story is always a challenge to me. I often rely on dialogue because my descriptions get too bogged down. I don't know whether starting with dialogue is good or not. What do you think?

Dialogue gives insight into the character and the immediate situation that character is dealing with. I start some stories with dialogue myself because it helps me focus on the problem the character is facing.
