First, a quick note to everyone who reads the Contest & Activities newsletter each week: I've joined this month as a permanent monthly editor, so you'll be seeing my name in here often. Thanks to The ScaryMaster for letting me take on the challenge. I hope you all enjoy my articles and send in responses at the bottom of the newsletter so I know you're reading.
This month's article is about flash fiction. If you're primarily a novel writer, writing flash fiction or microfiction can be great practice in breaking the wordiness habit. With only a few thousand words to tell your story, excessive description can cripple your word count.
Leaving a few clues for your reader can help them form their own image and help your plot platform have something to rest on. Even though flash fiction is short, you still need your basics. Start with an introduction: move on to your storyline - ascending conflict, climax and a resolution.
Pulling all these elements together in so few words is a challenge. Practice your skills with some of the many flash fiction contests on our site. Sometimes your story will outgrow the rules limit or you might not finish in time, but the point is you're writing and developing. I think the most fun is taking a prompt and twisting it into something compelling or funny.
So give a flash fiction contest a try, you'll have fun exercising your arc.
