“We improve ourselves by victories over ourselves. There must be contest, and we must win.”~~Edward Gibbon
“I opened-up a yogurt, underneath the lid it said, "Please try again." because they were having a contest that I was unaware of. I thought maybe I opened the yogurt wrong. ...Or maybe Yoplait was trying to inspire me... "Come on Mitchell, don't give up!" An inspirational message from your friends at Yoplait, fruit on the bottom, hope on top.”~~Mitch Hedberg
“The real contest is always between what you've done and what you're capable of doing. You measure yourself against yourself and nobody else.”~~Geoffrey Gaberino
“Behold a contest worthy of a god, a brave man matched in conflict with adversity”~~Seneca |

I received an email from someone the other day and in it they made a comment about why should they enter a contest against other awesome writers on site when they didn't stand a chance of winning. This really bothered me for a couple of reasons.
1. A contest should be fun. If I expected to win every contest I've ever entered, I'd be a)deluding myself and b) taking the joy out of it.
2. I look at a contest as not just pitting myself against others, but more importantly, pitting me against myself: Can I rise to the occasion? Can I write something that would fit? If not, I try again. Just because I look and see authors I respect have already entered doesn't slow me down, in fact, it speeds up the process. I like being in that sort of energized competition with my peers.
I've entered contests and I've judged them. Been on both sides of the coin so to speak. Both are work! Both are fun. Both are learning experiences! Some contests I've entered numerous times and never won. Others, I win occasionally. That IS the fun part! The cool feelings when I do, the determination to improve an entry when I do not. Just because I enter a piece into a contest, does not mean I cannot make it better!!!
It is, after all, all about perfecting our art of learning, our art of writing, and our art of communicating. So, please. . .do not be intimidated: Get out there and enter a contest today!

I'm a guest editor this week so I haven't any feedback to offer. But this was fun and I found some new contests that have my muse just a simmering away! |
