Meeting Newbies (and Not-So-Newbies)
You may have just joined Writing.Com, or you may have been around for years, but either way, there are people you haven't met here yet. There are interesting writers, prospective readers, excellent reviewers, and many are involved with one or more activities. This week, let's look at how to use activities to get to know people.
Contests
Certainly, it is fun to enter writing contests to inspire your writing, and it is great fun to win and be able to show off your accomplishment. But have you thought of contests as a way to meet people and share your writing? One good idea is to review all the entries in a contest yourself - nobody said only the judges can review the entries. If you do this while the contest is going, you will do your fellow contestants a favor by helping them catch any mistakes or weaknesses, and you'll encourage them to review you back. You'll also get to know the participants in a contest, and soon they'll recognize your name and look forward to your participation in a contest.
Auctions
Auctions are great for raising funds, but they are also a good way to participate when you don't have a lot of gift points of your own. Donate a review package, and the auction holders will be grateful, and the bidders will get to know you as well. Buy a package and you may make a friend as well as win the package.
Interactives (Interactive Stories and Ins & Outs)
Writing.Com was originally created for sharing Interactive Stories, and jumping in is easy with most of them. Pick a brand new story and you will likely find more new members, or an older story and you will likely find a healthy mix of regulars and new members. Interactive Stories put the "social" into "social networking", while still allowing you to write and exercise your creative muscles. Ins & Outs are also great ways to meet people, and the writing is usually kept to a line or two.
One Request
I have the honor of being one of the judges for the official Writing.Com contest for October (see below), and I'd love to see your entries. Don't be shy, I promise we judges won't bite, and you just might win $100.00 in Writing.Com Gift Points!

Contests
A long running contest with a good mix of newbies and regulars participating.
A wonderful contest, and reviewing the entries doesn't take much effort. Go ahead, enter as well.
Always good for a laugh, and a great way to meet a wide variety of WDC members.
Showcases some of the best talent on WDC, both new and old.
Auctions
Auction where you get to name the places and travel the world (sort of).
Bids opening Oct. 10 for lots and lots (and lots and lots) of images and signatures.
Interactives
Not all interactives are fiction, some are like this and encourage participants to share their own stories.
One of many interactive stories that grow bigger and better for years (three in this case).
...while this one has been around for six years, and has 700+ chapters. Wow!
A fun In & Out, but be careful or you will while away your whole afternoon here.

This is my first guest editor stint with the Contests & Activities newsletter, so rather than sharing feedback, I'll just ask a question. What Halloween activities have you found on Writing.com? There are many, and I'd be interested in hearing which you have found, which you have liked in years past, and which are worth focusing on in our newsletter.
