Drama is:
#1 - The Greek word for "action."
#2 - A real life situation or succession of events having the dramatic progression of a play.
Well, here we are in the middle of the December holiday season and I like to turn the focus of my December Drama NL to holiday writing and showcase some of the great holiday stories we have here on WDC.
The December holidays, Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza are something we look forward to every year. Why? Is it the gifts? The feelings of good will? The fun that's had shopping or putting up the decorations? I think the holidays tend to bring out the best in all of us. In this newsletter, I'll be talking about some familiar themes in holiday writing, sharing some thoughts about Dicken's "A Christmas Carol," and posting some links to some of my favorite holiday stories here on WDC. |

One thing I've noticed is that drama is rooted in every day life. It's sad, happy, poignant, and meaningful, (the drama masks come to mind!) and the holidays usually bring those emotions out more so than any other time of the year. Several themes that you'll find throughout holiday writing include:
Depression
Greed
Generosity
Loyalty
Kindness
Finding ourselves
Fulfilling our calling
Greed and depression are more "gritty" themes, but also realistic. Without those themes, then it's hard to add generousity, kindness, or fulfilling our calling into our holiday story.
One story that has come to almost embody the Christmas spirit is Dicken's novella, "A Christmas Carol." It was published in 1843 and Dickens drew on his own experiences as a young boy working in a shoe polish factory to inspire the story. After being shown his greedy selfish ways by three ghosts, Scrouge changes his ways and becomes a nicer, kinder man.
There are many holiday themes in Dicken's story including greed, kindness, and finding ourself, but what gives the story resonance is the fact that it illustrated how the holidays bring out the best in us.
