Letter from the editor

For a moment, please suppose
that the world has NO prose.
Everything - physics, history, geometry
needs be expressed through poetry.
Mailman, grocer, mechanic, nurse
To be addressed just in verse.

Would poetry meet the challenge?
Would it have the needed range?
The user manual for your comp
Would it gain in style, or lose in oomph?

What about the news?
Current events and expert views?
Would good news make you sing?
Bad news lose some of its sting?

It would be pretty hard to reject
A lyrical science project.
Or give a scathing, rhymed retort
To a poetic book report.

A simple visit to the dentist
would give more than molars a twist
'Coz if you rhyme 'bicuspid'
Well, stupid, you get ... Cupid!

Or when you visit the store
and, like Oliver, you ask for more,
If it's going to take a while
The assistant MUST wear a smile!

So, if the world had NO prose,
Would each thorn grow a rose?
Saying everything in verse
Makes it better, not worse!
