Activity and Contest Organization

It's that time of the year... We all make resolutions that may or may not last and I have one more to suggest: Organization! By all means, organize your desk or your closet, but this suggestion is particular. Organize your contest or activity. Often, a member will come up with an activity or a contest and then paste it together so hastily, it doesn't do well.

So take a little time when creating, or even when opening a new round for a ongoing contest / activity. Think about what worked and what didn't work.

*Checkv* Is the contest/activity set up in an organized and attractive way?

*Checkv* Did the members who participated understand the rules clearly?

*Checkv* Were there instructions and a place for the members to ask questions?

*Checkv* Were the dates/times for participation clear?

*Checkv* Did the judges understand what was required of them? And did they know their deadline?

*Checkv* Were the winners notified on a timely basis?

*Checkv* Did you read the feedback/suggestions posted by the participating members?

Setting up your contest/activity takes a little time, but a well presented page attracts more participants. Think about cleaning up and simplifying your page. Make it attractive and dress it up using color and a few images.

A few clear, concise rules are much easier to understand and follow rather than a pile of vague ones. The clearer your rules, the less issues you will have with members not understanding and breaking them. Survey forms can be an awesome tool for members to send questions or suggestions. Every suggestion doesn't have to be implemented, but often they are helpful to improve your item. Precise dates and times can be crucial to ending a contest or activity fairly.

Notifying your winners is a bit time consuming unless the participating members are in a group, BUT very helpful in reminding members to fulfill their obligations in contests and auctions. Plus, it gives others a chance to congratulate your winners.

So take a little time during the lull after the holidays and reevaluate your contests and activities. It's the perfect time to improve them and attract more participation.

Ask & Answer

This month's question: What are some common mistakes you see in hosted contests or activities?

Last month's question: What are you focusing on, during the holiday season?

Andrea, T Author IconMail Icon replied: With the economy being the way it is now, I am focusing on spending as much time with my family as possible. I want them to know how much I love them and appreciate the fact that we are still together as a family. I also love helping those in need. I lost my job in June, and haven't been too successful in getting another, so this will be the first Christmas that I will not be able to give out presents, but the one thing that I can give is LOVE, which is always free and it, to me is the greatest gift of them all. Happy Holidays to all! May the love of God embrace you and your family, and keep you safe from harm this season and all the days of your life!

Thank you!
