Forbidden love. It’s a phrase that catches the interest of many, a topic that’s been the subject of numerous poems, plays, books, and movies. It will also be my topic this week, as I fill in as a guest editor!

Forbidden Love
Two simple words, yet they evoke a strong innate response in a reader. Why is that? Is it the potential for tragedy and danger? Is it the deep emotional ties and promise of angst? I’m not sure what it is, to be honest, but tales of star-crossed lovers have always been my favorite.
There are many premises for stories about ill-fated lovers, but the underlying theme is always the same. Something, or someone, keeps them apart. This reaches well above the normal conflict most relationships have and beyond the usual insecurities and doubts plaguing couples. It’s an external factor neither of them have control over, and many times, one that cannot be resolved. It adds tension, drama, and plot conflict to the max.
 Shakespeare’s tragic couple, Romeo & Juliet, are kept apart by their families. The Montague and Capulet feud tears the young lovers apart and numerous lives are lost before this powerful story comes to a close. Bitter enemies make for strong conflict. Family is a close tie many of us can relate to. So is love. What do you do when loving one means losing the other?
Social status is another good facet to explore. I’ve seen this happen many times (even in my own family). Sometimes the other side of the tracks might as well be worlds away. How easy would it be for a wealthy man or woman to bring home someone well below poverty level? While the couple may be madly in love, their families and friends are not apt to be accepting of such things, let alone thrilled. Here, you can also think of office relationships. Boss and employee romances are often strictly forbidden in work places. Sometimes this even extends to mere co-workers. It makes for a high stakes game!
May-December relationships raise more than their fair share of raised eyebrows. There are many factors that play into age gaps.
Previous commitments. Marriage doesn’t always mean happily ever after. It’s sad, but very true. Many people stay in relationships that are unhealthy or unhappy for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, someone else comes along and opens their eyes, thus the start of a truly forbidden affair.
Total opposites. Good vs. evil. Perhaps a bit of a stretch but many paranormal romances play on this key element. Angels falling in love with humans, demons falling in love with angels, ghosts, etc. The sky is the limit. Any mixture of human and non or good vs. evil works well in this category. It’s bad enough trying to hide or explain your actions to family or superiors, let alone an entire race or species!
I hope this list has given you some ideas and helped get the creative juices flowing. Romance and love are a wide, versatile genre that we can see infused in just about everything. From drama, to comedy, to horror, love is often there hiding behind the scenes.
