Letter from the editor

Spring has arrived in the northern hemisphere. Weeds are springing up and growing like weeds. Flowers and trees are blooming and spreading pollen. Days are getting longer and becoming warmer. In some places, winter is still hanging on tenaciously, but that will not last. Spring is here with all the beauty and myths the season brings to mind.

Today we know that the seasons occur because of the way Earth’s axis is titled. Because of this title, section of the planet pointed toward the sun gets more sunlight and the part titled away from the sun gets less sunlight. Therefore, while it is spring in the northern hemisphere winter is occurring in the southern hemisphere.

Our ancestors had their own explanations for the seasons. They used myths, stories about gods and goddesses to explain the seasons and why those seasons reoccurred at regular intervals. One of those myths concerned Persephone, the goddess of spring and queen of the underworld. To the ancient Greeks, spring occurred when Persephone left the underworld and winter when she returned to Haides, her husband.

In the circle of the year, spring follows winter. While winter is a time of death, spring is the time of rebirth and new growth. Spring is a time of resurrection when new crops sprout from the earth. It is a time of birth when birds lay their eggs and animals produce young. It is a time of abundance and blessing after a long cold winter.

Ask & Answer

Shard Author Icon writes: I usually think of what I want the character's personality to be like. If they're good or evil, how they look, really just different things then I research different names find a match I like and then change the name a little. Or if I'm feeling really creative I make my own names :)

Krish D. Author Icon writes: Lately I use the middle name of people I know, if I based the character on them. But sometimes I may look around my immediate area at words that are around me and try to combine a few in some way. I've even tried thumping the keyboard and trying to "adjust" the letters that are produced into what might sound like a name.

{suser:sticktalker)} writes: Snow,
I think the example of "Scrooge" was backwards. The MEANING today of the word came from the STORY, not vice versa. I'm working on a novel set in Roman times, my names need to come from a list of common Roman names I've found. The names I select area based on that list. However, I DO see what you are getting at in this newsletter. Thanks
Lyle

LJPC - the tortoise Author Icon writes: If I asked my characters to name themselves, I'm sure they'd be delighted. They, like we, love aliases and new handles. But I get to name them because I'm the MASTER! *Smirk* Mwuhahahah!

What are some other myths about spring?
