Contests vs Activities
defining the advantages and differences
Contests and activities go hand in hand on Writing.Com, but what's the real difference between them? Both involve interaction between community members and offer some type of reward whether it's an actual prize or just the experience of involvement. But there are subtle differences, too, which affect the decision to host or participate in a contest vs. an activity.
Contests:
Competition! At the heart of a contest is competition. Participants compete for a prize.
Rules! In general, there tend to be more rules, perhaps stricter rules in a contest.
Prizes! Contests offer prizes, such as gift points, reviews, merit badges and awardicons to its winners.
Benefits of a contest:
As a participant, you're looking at competition to inspire you to create a flawless piece of work, and a prize to encourage you to enter. There is generally a waiting period - waiting for the contest to close for entries, then waiting for the judging process.
As a host, a contest can be very rewarding! You not only get a good deal of entries to read and enjoy, but you get the thrill of awarding prizes and announcing winners. It can involve a good deal of commitment and time, but it can also be very rewarding!
Activities:
Interaction! Activities promote interaction between community members.
Experience! Often, the prize of an activity is the experience of participation.
Inspiration! Activities can work to inspire writers. The goal of an activity is usually to inspire participants to come up with a new idea.
Benefits of a contest:
Contests can offer a bigger reward for participants, as you're pushed to work for perfection in the hopes of winning a prize. In general, a contest can offer a greater inspiration.
Hosting a contest can require a greater commitment for a host, as you'll need to keep a careful eye on each entry to ensure fair judging and also to ensure prizes get to the winners.
There are advantages to both contests and activities. Mainly, it's an issue of time - In general, activities require less time and commitment from hosts and participants, though in many cases, contests can offer a greater amount of inspiration and prizes. It's one of those, "You get what you give" situations. In most cases, though, you'll find yourself inspired and involved with either choice!
Always keep on writing!

My unpublished novel, Heart of the City, is one of two finalists in an international fiction competition run by Leisure Horror. They're looking to find the next big horror author! As a long-time member of the WDC community and former mod (also former newsletter editor) I'm asking for your help. If you could feature my item, I would so appreciate it. My item does feature an activity--a gift point drawing at the end of the contest! Thank you so much. ~ Ghost of Stereotomy ![Author Icon](https://images.Writing.Com/imgs/writing.com/writers/costumicons/ps-icon-regular-10.gif)
I'd be happy to feature your item! ![Bigsmile *Bigsmile*](https://images.Writing.Com/imgs/writing.com/writers/e21/bigsmile.png)
