About This Newsletter

How closely does an author look at the meaning of the words used, when rewriting flash fiction? Flash fiction is like a poem, when it comes to word choice the more precise the word the better the description.

Letter from the editor

Word choice is emphasized more in writing poetry then in writing fiction, but often times a good description comes down to choosing the precise word to create a picture in the reader’s mind. This is especially true in flash fiction where word count defines the genre. Since flash fiction is a thousand words or less, the choice of a single word can mean the difference between a good and a bad description.

What is a good description? Creating a picture of the setting in the reader’s mind is only part of a good description. The author must also reveal the main character’s personality and physical appearance. A good description helps build and carry forward the plot of the story. This is where word choice becomes important in flash fiction.

In short stories and novel chapters, an author can use several paragraphs to build descriptions, but in flash fiction a writer may have only a single sentence to build a description that grabs the reader’s attention and carries the plot along. Word is critical in this instance because the difference between a good description and a poor description may be a single word.
