Welcome to this week's edition of the WDC Horror/Scary Newsletter.
"Horror is that which cannot be made safe -- evolving, ever-changing --
because it is about our relentless need to confront the unknown,
the unknowable, and the emotion we experience when in its thrall."
"Horror is not a genre...horror is an emotion."
Douglas E. Winter
"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear,"
H.P. Lovecraft
Writing horror opens a dialogue, interactive, between the writer and reader. And the dialogue is as varied as the writers and readers who embrace this otherworld, be it supernatural or mundane.

Airport scanners ~ scanning for contraband, finding silicone, plastic, mercury, steel, rubber, latex, microchips, among other add-ons to the human frame. No, we don't profile because we don't know what to search for to find the aliens among us that would do us mortal harm. What we find are children with metal braces on their teeth or seniors with a gold tooth or a latex ostomy bag (punctured recently to the embarassment of the wearer).
How they must be laughing at our plebian efforts, those true aliens among us. Think about it, if they have the technology to travel light-years to reach our planet, they've certainly mastered replicating human anatomy and don't need silicone implants to mimic the female form or chips to make a heart beat. They are the most humanoid in appearance and the least in desire.
And once they're done laughing, or however they express mirth, they go on with their exploration of our world, culling and harvesting mortals at will, as they propagate their species. Could not the Bermuda Triangle be an undersea garden where flesh is removed and the life essence imbibed, leaving but an echo of once sentient mortals. Or, as one dozes among the clouds in a metal carapace, is not the recycled air but the exhalation of beings tasting the fruit of our constant cellular division?
Look past the scanners and perhaps you'll get a glimpse of the real scanners as they walk, and fly, and ride among us. What about the guy who just bumped your shoulder, don't the eyes look so intense, so hungry, though he appears well endowed. Instead of a smart remark or return nudge, just turn away and head for the nearest exit lest the scanner find you suitable for its next meal, or maybe just a snack.
Now check out some of the subjects our Community reveals as they scan the horizon and embark with them on the journey.
