About This Newsletter

A banner for the Romance/Love newsletter.

2011 is here! Let me wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year! I know WDC is running the official "Dear Me" contest, which involves goals and resolutions for the New Year and I wanted to give it a shout out. I'm also going to talk a little about goals and resolutions in your romance writing. Enjoy!

Letter from the editor

Making a resolution, especially around the New Years sounds like fun, doesn't it? I never do well with them. So, what is a resolution? It's a formal expression of an intention, firm determination. Sometimes, sadly, firm determination fails us.

I'd much rather establish goals.

A goal is an objective you wish to meet. It may require firm determination, but goals generally require establishing, specific, attainable, realistic, and time-targeted objectives.

As a romance writer, I much prefer establishing yearly goals than resolutions. Why? Because mentally I feel like I have a whole year to accomplish my goals.

So what are some of my romantic goals this year?

*Star* 1. Continue editing my historical romance, "The King's White Rose," and submit it to the Wild Rose Press.

*Star* 2. Finish my paranormal romance "The Wolf's Torment" and have it to the publisher by 1 FEB.

*Star* 3. Research and start my World War II Romantic suspense, "Berchtesgaden in Twilight."

It's a full plate. So what are your goals?

Let's start here: Do you want to improve your craft? I highly recommend the contests here on WDC. Writing short stories helped me to master word count requirements. Also, the Writer's Digest's contests are great for helping one improve and receive recognition.

If you want to understand plot, structure, story arcs, dialogue, characters, setting, happy ever after, and romantic subgenres, maybe research might be a good goal to make. There are several online resources and books you can seek out. One of my favorites is On Romance Writing, by Leigh Michaels.

Do you want to be published? There are several small romantic presses that are looking for good, solid stories (as well as erotica). These include: Wild Rose Press, Whimsical, and Sourcebooks.

*Reading* One of the best ways to improve is to read other romance authors. That may be a good goal: read more. If you're serious about your romance writing, reading romance helps.

What romantic writing goals will you set for yourself? I'd love to hear about them. Write in and share!

Smiles
Steph

Here's some feedback from my NL dtd: 14 DEC 2010

My favorite Christmas story has to be Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", probably because I've heard it every Christmas since I was little. Merry Christmas, everyone! :)

-Fiona

Hope you had a great Christmas, Fiona. Thanks for sharing!

Inspirational romances are my genre, so I appreciate your highlighting it! Christian women seem to appreciate romances that are sure to avoid the explicit bedroom scenes and these are universally frowned on by Christian publishers.

I hope to read more about this genre and the others you plan to write about! Thanks for all you do!

I think you are getting inspirational stories confused with inspirational faith/christian stories. A story can be inspiring without the element of faith. Even non-fiction stories can be placed under the name of inspirational. For example look at the international best seller "Three Cups of Tea". There was religion involved, but no one has a faith conversion. Religion was the cause of conflict in some ways.

STEPH: I think that is a matter of how to market a story, and I'm talking about those inspirational romance stories that have an element of faith in them that helps one of the leads make a faith journey and find love. Certainly a story can be inspirational without the element of faith, but those who want to read inspirational romance want that element of faith in them, I think.

Fine advice about writing on the subject of love and some spiritual awareness. This time of year is filled with beautiful love stories that include the"greater power" and personal spiritual finding.

I find I enjoy watching them, thus, would enjoy reading them, also.

Great Newsletter, Steph!
Merry Christmas to you and yours!

STEPH: Hope you and yours had a great Christmas, too, WebWitch!

Love is interesting. However, there is a dark side to watch out for.

Especially in October! hehe
