There's no doubt about it: April showers create mud. And mud creates ruts where tires get stuck and just spin, spin, spin.
Mud
Ruts
Stuck
This happens to writers all the time. We spin our wheels and get nowhere. We are stuck in a rut and there's no tow truck to call to pull us out.
Writer's Block
Rut
Stuck
We know rain and dirt create mud. But let's take a look at possible causes for Writer's Block:
Stress: Perhaps you need a tune-up! Figure out what is causing this stress.
Lack of energy: Fill up you tank! Are you eating healthy? Exercising?
Loss of direction: Map out your destiny and set goals.
Or maybe you need a spark to generate new ideas:
Read the newspaper for interesting stories.
Listen to conversations for dialogue ideas.
Notice quirks in people you could use for your characters.
Look through books with lots scenery for possible settings for your story.
Describe what causes emotions on all levels in yourself and others.
Feel the rain, soak up the sun, face the wind, shiver in the snow.
Excerpt: The house was private and secluded. Looking at it from the front it was a blank wall of ash grey bricks. It seemed closed off from the world. Kelly loved it.
Short and simple. A boy has a short encounter with their high school 'crush'. by skrbzz
Excerpt: Pulling out his cell phone, he scrolls through his contact list several times. Sliding his phone back into his tattered jeans, he cautiously looks up. Katie’s rosy cheeks glow beneath the gray sky. Laughing with her friends, she combs her dancing hair back into place with the tips of her fingers. Their eyes meet again.
A brother and sister are in the woods after running away the night before. by Chris
Excerpt: Cottony mist still clung to the Appalachian paths in those early hours, pressing like a damp mask over my mouth and nose. The unholy sound echoed from some distance behind me, screeching once so briefly that it could have been nothing more than the catcall of a morning bird to someone else’s ear. But not mine.

Maverick I loved the connotation “Imitation is not plagerism” . I completely agree with the words of Cubby that in the world of writing we don’t limit the horizon of our imaginations by imitating our favourite authors or their words, on the contrary an imitation or a quote from our favourite writings expands the domain of our thinking and helps in embellishment of our creations as well.
~ Nicely said! Thank you.
poppongcorn I'm also a newbie writer here, and I love to write stories! I like it when people enjoy my stories and just for them to take the time to read them, whether they like them or not. It means a lot to somebody when someone else takes time to look at something they made.
~ Welcome! Sounds like you are in the right place!
BIG BAD WOLF Feeling Thankful I don't normally try to imitate other writers, but I did just recently write a poem in tribute of Brian Jacques, a great children's author who'll be miss, because he inspired me to write my own things.
~ I've included your tribute under Submitted Items by Members. You are right, Brian Jacques will be greatly miss.
