Letter from the editor

With bright lights illuminating the night sky, as loud rockets emphasized each sparkling bloom, the 4th of July was celebrated all around us. Prior to the celebration, there was a large build-up of anticipation. Displays popped up everywhere with red, white, and blue colors, announcing to all that a celebration was eminent. Celebrations and events are often represented by noise and color. These items are used to draw attention and announce to all that something exciting is about to happen.

Limited to the space we have in this community, noise is heard through group emails. When your group is about to launch an activity, an email is sent out to members so as to garner as much participation and help as possible. How do you advertise to those not in the group? To send emails to non-group members would be spamming, and we all look down our noses at that. Spam is best left in the can, or served, in a meal, not by email. So what avenue does that leave the host of the activity? Yes, there is the "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window., but is that enough?

To help build anticipation for an activity, you could leave the item on private, or group only access, while you spread the word through reviews. Have each group member use a specialized sig, announcing the activity and date, when they do public reviews. Encourage the reviewing through a small reward or recognition for the members. Now you have accomplished several things. You have promoted reviewing, built up some energized excitement about an activity to be launched on a certain date, and shown some member appreciation. All of this with one project.

This may seem like a lot for a small activity, but it can be worthwhile and satisfying to try. With so much going on, this could be used to promote any activity, such as, for the site birthday, labor day, back to school, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other item or day you wish to celebrate. So why not give this a try for your next fundraiser, and write in to tell us how it went.

Ask & Answer

Brooke Author IconExcellent newsletter WhoMe. *Thumbsup* What a great idea to explain Scroll! Also thank you for highlighting my activity "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window..
To answer your question about how to spark more activity in a contest, my main answer would be - think outside the box. You have to surprise them and make everyday activities fun. If you can do that, participants will come running.

NickiD89 Author IconOkay, so I'd never even notice Scroll before. Ever! So I checked it out and met a couple awesome people (*waves to ruwth Author Icon and ⭐Princette♥PengthuluWrites Author Icon*). We played a game (I got 3rd place *Pthb* and 50 gps!) and it was a lot of fun. So thank you for teaching me yet another facet of WDC that I'd never stumbled across before!

Jeff Author IconThanks for your NL this week! Sometimes I think people overlook Scroll, but you've done a great job of highlighting some of its best features. Well done! *Smile*
