Letter from the editor

In this day and age of texts and emails, don't forget the age-old love letter. Perhaps now, more than ever, the writing and receiving of a love letter is the perfect way to show background, depth, and true emotion whether between two live, breathing people or two characters which, if done correctly; are two live, breathing people!

Characters are apart--whether forced by circumstance, off on a business trip, gone to a funeral or off trotting the globe--the perfect time for a letter expressing what-ever might be needing saying to that other character. It is a great way to show interior mindset, to convey info in an unusual way and to further a story line.

There is just something about a love letter that draws the reader into the deeply personal nature of the correspondence and in doing so, not only furthers the story, but connects to a reader's imagination as well.

Love letters can be straight-forward or intensely poetic. And, from what I have been able to gather, pretty much everyone (whether they will admit it or not) likes to get them. It shows love, but more, it shows effort and caring. It takes time to write it out, to rewrite it on something special and there is a reason why folks keep them, often tied with faded ribbons tucked away someplace safe.

On another note, the writing of love letters can be a focus of a story. The exchange of them where the reader reads one then the next, the story unfolding through the letters! Imagine a soldier far from home and his sweetheart or wife, an explored away at sea,or a husband and wife working far from each other because that was what they had to do to have jobs. There is more to life than a text to pick up milk and the dry-cleaning or a quick call to say I'm working late, again.

Imagine receiving that call and knowing you are eating dinner alone. You get to your driveway, grab the mail, and head inside. There along with the cell phone bill, three ads and a reminder from your dentist, is a square envelope with familiar handwriting on it. You shake your head, quickly reviewing dates . . .is it your anniversary or did you forget your birthday? No. Inside is a warm and loving note, affirming your spouse's (girl friend's, daughter's, son's, great-aunt's or grandmother's) love. Suddenly, your feet stop hurting, your mood brightens and you smile.

Ask & Answer

Just for the heck of it, write someone (anyone) whom you are close to a love letter, by hand and mail it. Or write to a family member with whom you have been out of touch. Write your spouse, you kid, your grandparents. What kind of response do you get?
