Vivid descriptions of settings help carry the plot of a story forward. A setting has many components; three of these are light, darkness, and shadow. By describing the contrast between light and darkness, an author can suggest that there is something weird, unusual, or not quite right about the situation the characters are facing. One way of describing the contrast between light and darkness is to use shadows, which need light to exist.

How do you describe a shadow? When you look at one, you see the dark shape of a building, a plant, an animal, or a mountain cast on the ground by light. Is the shadow faint, because clouds come between the sun and the object? Is the shadow deep and dark, because the sun shines directly on the object without interference from clouds? The depth of the shadow depends on the brightness of the light creating it.

You can begin by describing the shape of the shadow, but that does not give any information about the light that gave birth to the shadow. Is the shadow so dark that it resembles starless void? When looking into the shadow do you feel as if you are looking into a bottomless pit? These descriptions give some information about the light shining on the object that is casting the shadow. In addition, they can imply that there is something unusual about the setting or the events in the story.

Instead of trees, I have giant lollipops in my front yard. The only problem is the neighborhood kids think they can eat my house. Stupid kids.
