A Romantic Birthday Dinner

Around Writing.com, we've been celebrating every single day this past week. Our site birthday is a very big event here and rightly so. The lesser known birthday this week was mine. Writing.com is still in the exciting stages of preteen age. You remember it, when you're not just ten but ten and a half because you just can't wait to be older. Some of you are a touch closer to my age and don't celebrate with such enthusiasm anymore. *Wink*

My husband and I celebrate in our own way, he is romantic but not in flashy ways. He's the type to pick flowers along the road while we're walking, or even surprising me with a spring bouquet from the grocery store for no reason at all. However, when it comes to birthdays and little holidays like Valentines day, we're don't really celebrate much. So it surprised me when he asked me to take off work this year so he could "take me out" for my birthday. I chose a well-known somewhat local restaurant that bordered on fancy without requiring reservations or taking out a loan to attend. It was expensive but it was a special occasion, and I'd heard they had amazing food so it was okay to splurge.

Don't trust everything you hear. *Laugh*

To make a long story short, the meal was not good, we ordered drinks that ended up being too strong (because we rarely drink) and ended up with a three digit bill for a 'so-so' meal. But did we have a good time? Honestly, we haven't laughed that hard in a while. We even laughed with the waitress. We commented on other patrons. We shared a somewhat unusual evening at a restaurant we'll most likely never return to (unless it's for that cheesecake *Inlove*) but it's a memory I wouldn't change. Why? Because sometimes it's even more fun when things don't go 'according to plan'.

So the next time you're writing your characters into a romantic setting, whether it be a birthday, anniversary, or any other holiday, consider not having things go "according to plan" for them. Don't be afraid to throw in a fire and have all the sprinklers turn on right in the middle of a special moment. Sometimes the most memorable (and romantic) moments happen by chance and all the planning in the world can't make the end result turn out any better. *Wink*

I hope you enjoyed this editorial. If you would like to share your thoughts, please send me a note using the box at the bottom of this newsletter.

Excerpt:
What do you do when the one thing you want is the one thing you can't have?

Do you simply move on; casting your desires onto other people or into other places, thereby creating (or falsifying) new desires, new wants, new goals merely to replace those that remain tauntingly unattainable?

Devotion  Open in new Window. [18+]
Michaela finally realizes what she has in Shane and gifts him the love he longs for.
by Mara ♣ McBain Author Icon

Excerpt:
Michaela blinked against the misting spray coming off the ocean. Clinging to Shane's hand she pressed close, clutching his tuxedo jacket closed around her prom dress. She had no idea what they were doing in the harbor, but he had asked her to trust him and he had made this night so special already he had earned a little leeway.

"Excuse me, but is your lap taken?"

I glanced up from my normal commuting stupor, and gazed into a young lady's pleading mascara eyes. The subway car was packed, and she was one of many who had nothing to hold on to. The swaying motion of the car and the tightly packed bodies pushed her around like a rag doll in a dog's mouth.

Dearest Julia,

I find myself, and the Georgia Belle, in calm waters and so I will take this time to write to you. As I look at the ocean that separates us, I see your eyes in the azure waves, eyes I miss already, and I have been gone only two days.

by Max Griffin 🏳️‍🌈 Author Icon

George clenched his coat and leaned into the bitter winds that blustered down Michigan Avenue. Snowflakes sparkled in the streetlights and prickled against his cheeks. He thought about catching a cab, but the fifty dollar fare to get to the north suburbs stopped him.

“The memory of this night will live in our hearts forever.”
by Bikerider Author Icon

Excerpt:
The ragged line of internment camp inmates waited for food they would not have fed to their dogs a couple of months ago. But today hunger burned in Katia's belly, she would eat anything. The people making their way to be served stood silently, their eyes focused on the sun drenched ground beneath their feet. The line moved closer to the food-one dusty step at a time.

The Pink Wine That Summer Open in new Window. [18+]
A novel of desire, heightened by youth, sparkling wine and a spectacular landscape.
by Lisa Avery Author Icon

Excerpt:
It was by pure chance that I came across it after all those years. I had been rooting deep within the abyss of a dusty, old drawer, looking for some photograph or memory, and there it was. It was gleaming up at me in the dusky half- light of my old bedroom, a haven that had been untouched by all those years.

Excerpt:
It was one of those typical winter days- frigid and snowy outside, cold and frosty inside; especially in a school that had a low budget and a crappy heating system. Today, however, this worked to Allie's advantage. Her plan was to keep her hat on as long as possible and hope that no one would question her about it.
